Week 6 is what we call the Blended Learning Week and basically, we take the time to perhaps do what we didn't have time to do, add to things, tweak things and ask questions whilst we're all here, and really consider after the rush and excitement (and perhaps also frustration) what we really want to use and what we can use in our own situations and how we will use it in our f2f teaching/learning. I liked proprofs - it certainly doesn't have as many features and options as quia, but it is free and it does't have the uploading problems people may face with hot potatoes, i.e. you don't need a server to upload your activity. On my way to Lisbon earlier today with two BaW friends to meet Cristina, I was commenting on how I liked the way you create a set of 4 multiple-choice sentences that appears as the answers to the first 4 questions, and then repeat the same process for the next 4 questions. It saves a lot of time in creating the quiz, because you don't have to think of 4 different options for each question. And you use the same process in this quiz. I like that. Kudos to you! |

That's Carnival - I particularly don't like it. Did you guys know that we have half holiday after Carnival? That is, Carnival ends on a Tuesday and people only go back to work on Wednesday after noon, to rest from all the partying!!! The first resource is a story by Donald Davis called "The Grand Canyon." Mr. Davis is a master American storyteller. His stories are "lol" funny, and "The Grand Canyon" is no exception. Susana Araujo #2751 | Hi! I'm back in action again :) This time I decided to try Script-O! and I thank Maru for her comments on this tool. They made me start :) Well, my impression is that this is indeed a very simple tool to work with and without the problems I faced with Hot Potatoes trying to upload on the net (by the way, I must answer Fernanda and all those who helped me.. I'll write another message in a while). It is possible, as Maru mentioned, to have quizzes separated by Class Pages as we can create as many as we want. Very simple and clear tool. However, working with this tool I may face some inconveniences such as not being able to upload pictures (am I right?). For me, this is very important because I work with small children, ages 6-10, and visual aid is a very significant resource. Other inconvenience I found was the fact that if I don't use my account for 30 days it will be deleted as well as its content. This means having to manage time and remember to go there every 30 days. But... for a free resource, I think it's worth it. I'd definitely use it for working with adults. Not having pictures makes me vote for the Hot Potatoes tool, despite the uploading difficulties we may face. Fernanda Rodrigues #2769 | Hi Susana You can include images with Script-O! but it seems to be a complicated process, at least I did not find a simpler way. You have to upload your files in upload, then go to classes and attach your files to a class, so that you may copy the image URL. After that you can insert an image in the quiz html editor. Thank you so much for your help making me understand how all these tools work :))) I followed your advice to upload images: went to files, uploaded the house image, went to class page and attached it. Easy! After that, I watched the tutorial for the upload part to find out how I could insert the image *in* the quiz. But the tutorial only showed me the steps I had already followed. I still don't know how to insert the image *in* the House quiz. If you go to my Class Page http://www.readingmatrix.com/quizmaker/classes/?id=1628 , you'll see two images attached: one .jpg and one .gif I uploaded the .jpg first and I couldn't even open it from the Class Page. Then, I thought it was because of the format and so I uploaded a .gif, just to check. But the problem stands as I can't open the images from there. You talked about copying the image URL and then insert it in the quiz html editor. But...how can I find the image URL? And the quiz html editor? Oh my! Oh my! Does this make any sense? Am I complicating things too much? First the Hot Potatoes and now this. Please, be patient :) Regarding Hot Potatoes, tomorrow I'm going to do some more and see how everything works. Fernanda Rodrigues #2798 | Hi Susana --First upload your images; --Then click on Classes, click on view Uner Relative Files, right click with your mouse over the image --Select copy image url. --Then go to Your quiz, Edit, select the image icon in the html editor and paste the url in the field Image URL. This is not practical at all. For some reason you find no images in the sample exercises. The editor should in my opinion have a way to insert images that had been previously uploaded. Another way is to link directly to images that are already on the web. If you still have difficulties, tell me , and I'll create a tutorial with screenshots. By the way which browser do you use? Context menus are different in Firefox and IE. I keep saying Hotpotatoes are more friendly.:) |

And here is the result - it is not a serious quiz to use in the classroom, it's one specially made for you guys, so I hope you all have some fun: http://www.readingmatrix.com/quizmaker/classes/?id=1630 I noticed something, though - Script-O doesn't seem to be friends with Mozilla... I started doing my class page and the quiz using mozila, and when I wanted to change the colors, a pop-up opened saying that I needed IE 5.5or higher to change the template, so I opened my script-o account in IE and I saw so many more options for changing the template, including a possibility of using pictures without having to upload them to your script-o account (so you don't use the 0.2MB limited storage space it offers). My first impulse was to answer "Yes", but then I thought you wanted to trick us and so I answered "No" (BaW is for Become a Webhead, I thought). Well, you mentioned there's a way of using images without having to upload them to Script-O! I'm curious how you do it. Can you tell us? It saves me a lot of time :)) |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2819 | Hi Susana and Fernanda ... the images I used needed to be uploaded somewhere, but not necessarily at script-o. For example, my picture had already been uploaded to our participants' wiki, which generates a url, and the drawing of the teacher I found in google, which also generates a url (the problem of using google's urls is that once the picture is removed from the original site, it is also removed from my quiz). Then when you are editing your script-o page or quiz, there is a formatting bar,with options for changing the fonts, changing background colors, adding links, and including pictures using a url too. Susana Araujo #2665 | Hi there! I think you might be able to see the exercise now. I opened an account in http://hosting-a.ipdz.com/default.asp. Then I found I had to get an FTPclient and I downloaded ws_ftp32 from the internet. The exercise URL is http://free.ipdz.com/susie/hot%20potatoes/what%20can%20the%20animals%20do.2.mht It works properly on my computer, but...not on my husband's... :-( The pictures I put on the exercise don't show. Maybe this will happen with you...If it does, please let me know and I'll try to figure out what the problem is. Thank you very much for all your support ;-) |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2689 | Hi Susana To create a matching exercise with HotPotatoes you should use the potato Match, then you have to create a web page either in standard format or as a drag and drop. The file created is an html file so that it can be seen by any browser. But the file in your link is a .mht file, how did you cretae it? You can upload html files to motime, I tried it the other day and you can link directly to it, or even embed it in a post. Take a look: If you use a server like http://hosting-a.ipdz.com/default.asp you have to upload the html file and all the images as well. |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2690 | Hi Susana I found a way to make images visible in hotpotatoes exercises uploaded to Motime, but it is rather complicated. If you want to try Upload the images. Then click on the image icon and see the page source. You'll have to find the new names Motime gives the images, something like: http://files.motime.com/3ef9534dae9fefa497662ec4ce6097da.jpeg Then you have to use that URL to change the path to the image in your Hotpot file: instead of inserting an image from your hard drive, insert an image from a Web URL. Save the file and export it to html and then upload it to Motime. It's possible, but it is hard work. If you have images, it's better to send everything to free.ipdz and just link in motime. |

Susana Araujo #2814 | Hello there :)) I managed to create another exercise using Hot Potatoes. This time I had no difficulties in the uploading process. Horray! http://free.ipdz.com/susie/my%20city%20vocabulary%20crossword.mht in "My City Crossword" button (http://funenglish4kids.motime.com/) Fernanda, I use Internet Explorer and this is how I get the .mht file: I save the Hot Potatoes exercise. Then, in the Hot Potatoes toolbar I click "Export to create a Hot Potatoes version 6 Web Page" and the exercise is saved as .html; After that, I open the .html file and I save it as .mht (my husband's advice, he takes all the credits :)) Then again, I open my FTP and upload the .mht file In the end, I link the document to my blog :)) Voilà! It's ready to go. |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2834 | Hi Susana Hotpotatoes exercises are supposed to be seen on the Internet by any web browser, and that's why they should be saved as html files. I can't open your file with Firefox, it asks me to save a file. If I open it with IE, the result is a list of letters that make no sense... Why does your husband think it is a good idea to save the files as mht? As for the size, I think mht creates bigger files, I have crosswords in html with just 18 kb, and your file is 86 kb. Now, regarding .mht and .html files: If I save the exercise in .htm and send it to the server, I can't see the pictures because they don't open. I found out that if I save in .htm, I have to upload to the server a file and also a folder containing the images. Saving in .mht, I don't need to upload to the server anything else, just the .mht file and the pictures show. For my husband (he has a mind of an engineer), this was the simplest way. Has anyone looked at Clarity Authorplus Light. Of course AuthorPlus has to be paid for but Clarity do make the free Light version available. They used to just give you an access code but I've just looked on their website http://www.authorplus.com/freecd/ and it seems you can now get a free CD-ROM with the program on from them. Here are some activities I've made (to practise spelling)using it: http://www.clarityenglish.com/ap/johannastirling/ . I hadn't visited this for a while and was a bit disappointed to see that it seems users have to register now to access the activities. But still all free. It's very easy to use and what I like is that you can get a really professional looking result. It doesn't have the flexibility of HotPOts but it's much simpler and looks snazzier. One really irritating thing with the free version is that you can have pictures but you can't choose what they are so sometimes, no usually, the pictures are completely irrelevant to your activity. Oh, well, beggars can't.... Have fun. |

It seems to me be a wonderful tool for institutions. It's a bit heavy with the downloads but is worth it. There is a Quiz Maker programme and a Quiz Player programme. In order to do the quiz as a learner, you must have Quiz Player on the computer you are working on. http://www.qedoc.com/downloads.php There are other solutions to sharing the quiz which can be consulted on the website, including good old printing out. Have a look. The possiblity of incorporating video and audio is really easy and quick and there is a vast range of question types. In a few minutes, I went from beginner to advanced level in the Quiz Maker as it is so user-friendly. I literally 'threw' together a nonsense quiz just to see how it works. Once your quiz is finished, you publish it. Now, here is where it becomes interesting - this is an online community so you are encouraged to share your materials and you can use everything that is there (I just completed a quiz about American presidents - guess how I got on?). You can belong to the public community or create a private community for your quizzes. As mentioned in my previous email, the one drawback at the moment is that when you publish, it has to be manually checked before being published to the public community (if you have chosen this option). They intend to stream this in the future. Once it's got the OK, it is listed for download. http://www.qedoc.com/library/beta/beta.php Mine under Moira Hunter My Rirst Test is listed towards the end. This is then downloaded as a zip file, not opened, placed in the Player file in C Programme files Quedoc and it opens automatically in the Quiz Player, where you build up your library of activities. There is evaluation, results, etc and you can print out your result sheets and obtain a certificate! It sounds complicated but once you're in it, it is very easy! They also intend to link up with Moodle XML format :-) For those brave at heart, please have a look at my test where I have a short audio file (using Audacity), a Coca-Cola ad video, drag and drop, virtual keyboard, MCQ, as examples. This supports a tremendous amount of files too. The project I shared with you last night was a big one- but the basic foundation is the same when we commit ourselves to doing a blended learning activity in the classroom. I'll share with you one of the first projects I did back in 2002-this was after I joined Vance Steven' EVO session on Webheads. I think you all have met Michael Coghlan- this project was a class activity. If you follow the links below, you'll see how a simple project can come to life- and yes- leave an indelible mark on students' learning. Here's how it all started...one message posted on the evonline webheads yahoogroup... http://www.geocities.com/aidenyeh/michaelc/howitcame.htm and see how everything went... http://www.geocities.com/aidenyeh/michaelc/index.htm These were the days where internet connection was bit slow. We didn't have Skype back then (or not that I know of). Bandwidth was the issue. Yet despite technological mishaps, there were other ways to patch the holes. One activity led to another, and another, and another- all with Webheads. The World Englishes project was a funded project- and I was selected to head it by our Department head- because I think she knew that I've got the skills. True. But these are the skills I learned from Webheads. In other words, I won't be where I am today without the help of Webheads. This is why this special group will always have a place in my heart. So if you've got a project or a class activity in mind that requires collaboration with a colleague- just call on Webheads- they won't let you down.(sounds like an Ad- but hey- i'm an advocate- so there you go) Congratulations again for completing this session. Photo Story is really made for digital images and Movie Maker for movies (camcorders). Of course you can put still images into Movie Maker and get a result very much like Photo Story. Up to last month only the Math teachers used computers, but mainly for Excel and very rarely connected to the internet for any task. Now there's a project going on with about 8 teachers from different departments involved. They're using a Moodle to upload files with exercises their students can do on their own. Some are using PPoint in their classes and one has a blog with his 8th grade students, but I haven't seen it. However, no one is using the Internet on a regular basis, as I've been doing for years. On the other hand, over the years nobody has acknowledged te work my students and I have been doing, especially the work of the students, which I find sadly amazing, but will not comment on... But while threading, it caught my attention and I wanted to post a comment. Not to surprise, the situation is the same in my school. But the reason is always the money. Although I work at a Technical University, the administrators always say that they could not find financial support to buy high-tech equipment in our school. So, we have computers at computer labs to enjoy out of class and thus we can only benefit from the internet to develop materials. We dont have computers or internet access in classes. This also discourages all the teachers who support implementing technology into teaching. |

I did manage to figure out myself how to add a video capture to my RealPlayer library and then to save it to a folder and then to upload it to my Moodle. But I need to find tips on how to save it best -- .wmv? or other? Is there a way to best save it/them smallest size? And how to save a photo/still shot? When I right click I'm given the option to save to a disk or to print -- but isn't there a way to save direct to My pictures folder? Anyone have quick answers for me or can direct me to a Help index/resource? There's NO "Help" button or file I can find with my install. |
Moira Hunter #2746 | Hi Holly, When you install your Logitech, there is a Quickcam folder placed in your Images folder and each photo you take is automatically placed there, as well as in your Picture Gallery when you have Logitech open to take pictures. The same applies for your videos - In My Videos, there is a QuickCam folder and you can find the video there, as well as in the Video Gallery if you have Logitech open to make a video. As for saving in which format, the videos are automatically saved in wmv. This is good for editing and adding effects with the programme in your pc (can't remember where you are mac or pc). But you have to be careful of size. |

Anyway -- to move blocks around to the configuration you want, turn on editing, then use the arrows to move them (for a two column look, send all blocks from left to the right or vice-versa. Hope this helps someone, somewhere. What I _really_ want to master is how to save my own theme -- but I don't know enough HTML or don't have enough comfort level/expertise level to understand how to make that happen. someday... |

It collapses the menubar into the word "menu" in the top left corner. When you click on "menu", the choices all appear in a drop-down list. If you embed MyChingo on a blog, wiki and moodle for example with the same account, the same messages can be heard on either support 3.-- It depends on which wiki you are using. Different wikis offer different privacy settings. They can be public, for groups and totally private for example. 4.-- The best thing Maru is just to take your time and explore the different tool options before using them. Look at the FAQ and help pages first and see what you want for your needs 5.-- Go to the top of your screen, click on View and then Tool Bar and 'unclick' the ones you don't want. Play around with it to see what you can do - it doesn't disappear 6.-- LOL - many, so you have to read the settings carefully when you set up any account |
Moira Hunter #2894 | Hi all, It seems that we are certainly not the only ones suffering from 'bugs' which PBwiki is experiencing having now officially released the rich text version (also referred to as WYSIWYG). Our wiki was created well before the beginning of this workshop using the wikistyle version (or classic version). Since the recent release of the rich text version, in theory you should be able to 'swap' from one to the other at the top right of the edit page. Some of you have seen that this is not what happens with disastrous results. Hence our recommendation to stay with the classic version for this BaW07 wiki. If you look here at the comments at the beginning, someone has submitted the following scream for help : "When I switched to point and click and then switched back, the formatting of the page was changed. Is there a way to return to the original formatting? (Ray Rodrigues, Homepage, 02.21.07 - 8:57 am " http://newfaq.pbwiki.com/The%20FAQ I've seen similar screams of anger and shouts for help elsewhere. Here, you can see that the rich text version needs careful handling at times too in Tips of the Week http://blog.pbwiki.com/?cat=12 It is also recommended that you have the latest Firefox or IE installed and mentions that it doesn't like Safari for example. Well worth having a look through and knowing that those who have experienced problems are not alone!! |

Maru del Compo #3000 | Today I saw a door open, a new path for teaching. I know I will not be doing what Rita and Aiden are dong in a short term but I saw me doing it in the future.
