WELCOME TO WEEK 6 :-)))

Moira Hunter

#2650

Hello to everybody!!

One week left of our six weeks online together :-((

One week to go before Party Time!!!! In Week 6, your Moderators are myself, Moira in France, Teresa in Portugal and Cris in England.

Week 6 is what we call the Blended Learning Week and basically, we take the time to perhaps do what we didn't have time to do, add to things, tweak things and ask questions whilst we're all here, and really consider after the rush and excitement (and perhaps also frustration) what we really want to use and what we can use in our own situations and how we will use it in our f2f teaching/learning. Please take a little time to read one or two of the readings mentioned in the wiki http://baw07.pbwiki.com/week6 and post your thoughts to the forum.

Come on Saturday 24 February at 14.00 GMT to Alado for a panel discussion with Aiden Yeh and Rita Zeinstejer on "blended learning: combining online activities or projects with face-to-face learning".

One thing you ABSOLUTELY MUST DO is reserve Sunday for Party Day!!!! Get husbands, wives, partners, children, neighbours, grandparents, friends, whoever to supply you with food and drink as you must be glued to your screen on that day!!!

Enjoy!!!

Hello again!

In addition to the page for reflections, there's also a "Blended Learning - Week 6" wiki page for you to report on the "questions of the week" (see link in Sidebar).

This week is slower. It should give you time to:

-- explore more exercise creator software and show us your end products (don't forget to include them in the "Your Applications" wiki page),

-- read our suggested articles and comment on them in the Forum,

-- answer the questions on blended learning (link in the Sidebar), and,

-- report on your reflections (link also in the Sidebar).

Last but not least, do not forget two very important events this week:

-- Aiden Yeh and Rita Zeinstejer's presentation at Alado on Sat, Feb. 24, at 14:00 GMT; and,

-- our Graduation party at Alado on Sun, Feb 25, at 13:00 GMT. (We will warn you if there is any change.)

Enjoy!

Hello to all BaW07 participants!

The "Reflections" wiki page is now up and ready to be filled in with all your thoughts, suggestions and comments about our 6-week workshop.

There are very short instructions in blue and an example. Do take a look before you start.

Here's the link:

Hi, Bawers!

I am lost in the cyberspace working with my blog, Mabel's blog and hot potatoes! I am a bit slow

Well, I am writing this message to invite you to visit Mabel's blog about Argenine culture. She has been very generous and invited me to collaborate with the content. I have added an article about "football and men" - What a topic! with links to some football teams- for football fans all over the world- and to other blogs: Carla Raguseo's !!

Thank you Carla for your comments - I invite all bawers to leave comments, of course! - I have linked your blogs. Check: the result is fantastic! We are really creating a net! Tell your students, they will feel encouraged to go on writing and publishing on the web.

Well, that's all for now. We are in the 6th week... certain saudage - please, Ronaldo, correct my spelling mistake- is filling my heart because we are near the end of BaW07.

Hugs to everybody, Nelba from Argentina

Hi, Nelba!

I can correct you Portuguese. :-) It's "saudade" or longing. But... no need for longing! We'll all be here on Feb. 26 and all year round till the BaW08!!!

So Feb. 26 is not the end, but the beginning of a new life for you all...

I left a comment in your post.

I like the soccer chants - brings back memories.

I lived in Iran for 2 years and in Germany for 10 - loved football. Both my sons (mow 32 and 26) played for German teams in as young boys. I even played for a local village women's team for several years :)

Dear Nelba,

It is my pleasure to visit such a wonderful blog. As an Argentinian teacher, I am very proud of the job Mabel and you are doing. That's why I felt compelled to leave a comment and the links to the blogs Jesica Bassani and I shared with our Brazilian colleagues. As you can imagine, carrying out a friendly exchange between Brazil and Argentina during the World Cup was not an easy task!!

Congratulations again and keep it going!!

Hi Mabel, Nelba, Sharon, Nina Lyulkun and all Bawers!

The blog is fantastic! I was listening to the football songs, you feel like you are at the stadium. I lived in Manchester for two years, I am a Manchester United fan I will say :-)))

Great work, I still need to learn a lot about blogs. I tried for a long time to post a voice reply, logged in to Motime and MyChingo to see if I could do it but had no luck.

It is encouraging to see two Argentinians publishing about their country's interesting bits and pieces. It is a shining site with smart work behind.

Congratulations!

Dear bawers,

I have some good news to share: my baby/teenager blog was born! Let me explain myself. In week 3, the one you guys worked with blogs, I was traveling, and didn't have time to work on creating one... the advantage is that while I was catching up, I could see many beautiful blogs, stole some good ideas =) and here is the result:

http://ihopeitworks.blogspot.com

I know you've probably seen many blogs already, but I would appreciate it a lot if you guys could take some time to surf around my posts and leave some comments.

I've been there http://ihopeitworks.blogspot.com/ and it is really excellent!! Well done! A fine handsome teenager blog ;-))

I've left comments but one more I would make is that in the great vote feature you have, there is no possibility to vote for "other"

Thanks so much for your comments, Moira! Something I liked about blogger is that it is so connected to google account that I could see you comments in my gmail at the moment you posted them (without having to work with rss feeds and stuff...). You're right, I forgot to add the "other" alternative in my voting tool (from pollhost.com, by the way - I was able to remove their ad =)), I'll try and fix that soon. Thanks so much for the support!

Dear All,

I would like to express my gratitude to those who have responded to my survey about "Giving and Receiving Gifts" in different cultures. I have learned a lot from your responses. Thank you very much!!!

I just gather the information from this survey and some additional information from my immigrant students and wrote an entry on my new blog:

I can use this "Culture note" for reading exercise, and I also created an interactive exercise for comprehension check after the reading.

Many thanks, :-)))

I´m a bit behind tasks. I´ve just created a quiz with quia and was wondering how to add audio to the quiz, as I saw it done in one of Ronaldo´s quizzes if I´m not mistaken. Do I have to record the audio files before creating the quiz? I´ve also added a chinswing link so that my students can record something about their best friends (the topic of last week was friendship).

Both activities have been included in the following blog:

http://www.culturaia.blogspot.com

#2934

Hi, Ana Maria!

To add audio to the quizzes, you have to record the audio files (Audacity is great!) and then upload them to Quia.

FYI, I remember that I read Quia Help for audio and it really did help me. :-)

#2648

Hi guys!

I tried using proprofs and created a (vocabulary) quiz for a group of mine. I liked proprofs - it certainly doesn't have as many features and options as quia, but it is free and it does't have the uploading problems people may face with hot potatoes, i.e. you don't need a server to upload your activity.

If you guys could take some minutes (less than 5, I guarantee - or you fail the quiz =)) and take the quiz and give me some feedback, it would be great!

Hi, Ronaldo!

I loved the quiz and the layout. And... I got 100%!!! I've become a fan of ProProfs.

On my way to Lisbon earlier today with two BaW friends to meet Cristina, I was commenting on how I liked the way you create a set of 4 multiple-choice sentences that appears as the answers to the first 4 questions, and then repeat the same process for the next 4 questions. It saves a lot of time in creating the quiz, because you don't have to think of 4 different options for each question.

And you use the same process in this quiz. I like that. Kudos to you!

The link works fine and it's a beautiful worksheet!

By the way, people in Brazil started dancing yesterday and will stop only on Tuesday! That's Carnival - I particularly don't like it. Did you guys know that we have half holiday after Carnival? That is, Carnival ends on a Tuesday and people only go back to work on Wednesday after noon, to rest from all the partying!!! Some companies - the school I work for, for example - only open the week after carnival!

Anyway, congrats on the worksheet, Susana.

Kind regards from Brazil

#2609

Hi everybody!

I decided to make a worksheet today, but I have to confess that I started doing it not knowing exactly what a wroksheet was. I mean, I know what a worksheet is, but I didn't know what result I would get from http://wizard.4teachers.org/, so I decided to write something about Brazil, just to test the tool. Here is the result:

http://wizard.4teachers.org/builder/worksheet.php3?ID=95290

Reflecting about the pedagogical usefulness of this tool, I thought of one activity. The teacher could write some questions in the content area and then provide some links to sites where students could find the answers. For example, I am teaching a group and their next unit talks about the Grand Canyon. Maybe I could write some quesitons about the Grand Canyon and provide some links with sites where the answers can be found. What do you guys think? What other uses have you found for this kind of worksheet?

#2626

Hi Ronaldo,

Congratulations on your first worksheet.

I liked your worksheet. I am still experimenting using a poor wiki which I hope to build gradually. last week I put a note to create a sheet like yours, but about our main port in Sudan. Maybe you can also put it like "In Focus" element, with each link takes them to the targted information, for example; discover the Grand Canyon, facts aboutGC, sightseeing guide, You can even create e-cards for the place for students to use after the lesson ends..Each link would take them to the information. Then they go to the questions with very rich vocabulary.

Ronaldo,

Since you mentioned that you were going to teach your students about the Grand Canyon, I must recommend two resources for you to consider using. The first resource is a story by Donald Davis called "The Grand Canyon." Mr. Davis is a master American storyteller. His stories are "lol" funny, and "The Grand Canyon" is no exception. Learn about it, and listen to an excerpt here:

http://www.jakeludington.com/audiobooks/The_Grand_Canyon.html. You can purchase the story at www.audible.com <http://www.audible.com/> .

The second resource is a book called "The Grand Canyon." The illustrations by Christopher Canyon are incredible! See it here:

http://www.amazon.com/Grand-Canyon-Trail-Through-Time/dp/0802786251/ref=ed_oe_h/105-6729434-4305253. I own this book and would be happy to mail in to you (if you promise to return it to me!)

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for this great resource. It's a pity that many links are not available. I would have loved to have listened to "A bear called Paddington" for example ;-)

I couldn't find the one you referred to but I found the Grand Canyon here by Bonnie Kline in the list

Script-O

Susana AraĂşjo

Susana Araujo

#2751

Hi!

I'm back in action again :) This time I decided to try Script-O! and I thank Maru for her comments on this tool. They made me start :)

Well, my impression is that this is indeed a very simple tool to work with and without the problems I faced with Hot Potatoes trying to upload on the net (by the way, I must answer Fernanda and all those who helped me.. I'll write another message in a while). It is possible, as Maru mentioned, to have quizzes separated by Class Pages as we can create as many as we want. Very simple and clear tool.

However, working with this tool I may face some inconveniences such as not being able to upload pictures (am I right?). For me, this is very important because I work with small children, ages 6-10, and visual aid is a very significant resource. Other inconvenience I found was the fact that if I don't use my account for 30 days it will be deleted as well as its content. This means having to manage time and remember to go there every 30 days. But... for a free resource, I think it's worth it.

I'd definitely use it for working with adults. Not having pictures makes me vote for the Hot Potatoes tool, despite the uploading difficulties we may face.

You can look at the exercise here:

http://www.readingmatrix.com/quizmaker/classes/?id=1628

by clicking in "My House".

I already linked it to my blog http://funenglish4kids.motime.com/ and it's working :)))

#2760

Susana,

Your Script-O exercise looks nice!

I wanted to show you a similar one I created with Interactive Exercise Makers, but it doesn't seem to be working any longer. Has anyone tried it? Can anybody lend a helping hand?

I just registered to Script-O again. I'd done so two years ago, but I don't know what happened.

Fernanda Rodrigues

Fernanda Rodrigues

#2769

Hi Susana

You can include images with Script-O! but it seems to be a complicated process, at least I did not find a simpler way. You have to upload your files in upload, then go to classes and attach your files to a class, so that you may copy the image URL. After that you can insert an image in the quiz html editor. There's a tutorial for the upload "part" here:

http://www.scriptopro.com/videotutorials/uploading.htm

Susana AraĂşjo

Susana Araujo

#2776

Hi Fernanda!

Thank you so much for your help making me understand how all these tools work :)))

I followed your advice to upload images: went to files, uploaded the house image, went to class page and attached it. Easy! After that, I watched the tutorial for the upload part to find out how I could insert the image *in* the quiz. But the tutorial only showed me the steps I had already followed. I still don't know how to insert the image *in* the House quiz.

If you go to my Class Page http://www.readingmatrix.com/quizmaker/classes/?id=1628 , you'll see two images attached: one .jpg and one .gif

I uploaded the .jpg first and I couldn't even open it from the Class Page. Then, I thought it was because of the format and so I uploaded a .gif, just to check. But the problem stands as I can't open the images from there.

You talked about copying the image URL and then insert it in the quiz html editor. But...how can I find the image URL? And the quiz html editor? Oh my! Oh my! Does this make any sense? Am I complicating things too much?

First the Hot Potatoes and now this. Please, be patient :)

Regarding Hot Potatoes, tomorrow I'm going to do some more and see how everything works.

Thank you so much

Fernanda Rodrigues

Fernanda Rodrigues

#2798

Hi Susana

--First upload your images;

--Then click on Classes, click on view Uner Relative Files, right click with your mouse over the image

--Select copy image url.

--Then go to Your quiz, Edit, select the image icon in the html editor and paste the url in the field Image URL.

This is not practical at all. For some reason you find no images in the sample exercises. The editor should in my opinion have a way to insert images that had been previously uploaded.

Another way is to link directly to images that are already on the web.

If you still have difficulties, tell me , and I'll create a tutorial with screenshots.

By the way which browser do you use? Context menus are different in Firefox and IE.

I keep saying Hotpotatoes are more friendly.:)

#2815

Hi everyone!

Maru and Susana's enthusiasm towards Script-O was so involving that I decided to give it a shot too. And here is the result - it is not a serious quiz to use in the classroom, it's one specially made for you guys, so I hope you all have some fun: http://www.readingmatrix.com/quizmaker/classes/?id=1630

I noticed something, though - Script-O doesn't seem to be friends with Mozilla... I started doing my class page and the quiz using mozila, and when I wanted to change the colors, a pop-up opened saying that I needed IE 5.5or higher to change the template, so I opened my script-o account in IE and I saw so many more options for changing the template, including a possibility of using pictures without having to upload them to your script-o account (so you don't use the 0.2MB limited storage space it offers).

Kind regards from Brazil (by the way, today is Carnival day - Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday... - in Brazil)

Hi Ronaldo!

...

Your quiz looks very nice. I like the colours :) And the content is very funny. Last question was a tricky one. I'm afraid I failed that... My first impulse was to answer "Yes", but then I thought you wanted to trick us and so I answered "No" (BaW is for Become a Webhead, I thought).

Well, you mentioned there's a way of using images without having to upload them to Script-O! I'm curious how you do it. Can you tell us? It saves me a lot of time :))

Ronaldo Lima, Jr.

Ronaldo Lima, Jr.

#2819

Hi Susana and Fernanda

...

the images I used needed to be uploaded somewhere, but not necessarily at script-o. For example, my picture had already been uploaded to our participants' wiki, which generates a url, and the drawing of the teacher I found in google, which also generates a url (the problem of using google's urls is that once the picture is removed from the original site, it is also removed from my quiz). Then when you are editing your script-o page or quiz, there is a formatting bar, with options for changing the fonts, changing background colors, adding links, and including pictures using a url too. It's a button with that clip-art symbol, I think. That's it!

Hi there!

I think you might be able to see the exercise now.

I opened an account in

http://hosting-a.ipdz.com/default.asp.

Then I found I had to get an FTPclient and I downloaded ws_ftp32 from the internet.

The exercise URL is

http://free.ipdz.com/susie/hot%20potatoes/what%20can%20the%20animals%20do.2.mht

It works properly on my computer, but...not on my husband's... :-( The pictures I put on the exercise don't show. Maybe this will happen with you...If it does, please let me know and I'll try to figure out what the problem is.

Thank you very much for all your support ;-)

#2689

Hi Susana

To create a matching exercise with HotPotatoes you should use the potato Match, then you have to create a web page either in standard format or as a drag and drop. The file created is an html file so that it can be seen by any browser. But the file in your link is a .mht file, how did you cretae it?

You can upload html files to motime, I tried it the other day and you can link directly to it, or even embed it in a post. Take a look:

http://test2007.motime.com/

If you use a server like http://hosting-a.ipdz.com/default.asp you have to upload the html file and all the images as well.

Fernanda Rodrigues

Fernanda Rodrigues

#2690

Hi Susana

I found a way to make images visible in hotpotatoes exercises uploaded to Motime, but it is rather complicated. If you want to try

Upload the images.

Then click on the image icon and see the page source. You'll have to find the new names Motime gives the images, something like:

http://files.motime.com/3ef9534dae9fefa497662ec4ce6097da.jpeg

Then you have to use that URL to change the path to the image in your Hotpot file: instead of inserting an image from your hard drive, insert an image from a Web URL. Save the file and export it to html and then upload it to Motime.

It's possible, but it is hard work. If you have images, it's better to send everything to free.ipdz and just link in motime.

Hello there :))

I managed to create another exercise using Hot Potatoes. This time I had no difficulties in the uploading process. Horray!

http://free.ipdz.com/susie/my%20city%20vocabulary%20crossword.mht

in "My City Crossword" button (http://funenglish4kids.motime.com/)

Fernanda, I use Internet Explorer and this is how I get the .mht file:

I save the Hot Potatoes exercise. Then, in the Hot Potatoes toolbar I click "Export to create a Hot Potatoes version 6 Web Page" and the exercise is saved as .html; After that, I open the .html file and I save it as .mht (my husband's advice, he takes all the credits :)) Then again, I open my FTP and upload the .mht file In the end, I link the document to my blog :)) Voilà! It's ready to go.

Hi Susana

Hotpotatoes exercises are supposed to be seen on the Internet by any web browser, and that's why they should be saved as html files.

I can't open your file with Firefox, it asks me to save a file.

If I open it with IE, the result is a list of letters that make no sense...

Why does your husband think it is a good idea to save the files as mht?

As for the size, I think mht creates bigger files, I have crosswords in html with just 18 kb, and your file is 86 kb. Please don't forget that you should not include spaces in the file names: it should be mycityvocabularycrossword or my_city_vocabulary_crossword or and not my%20city%20vocabulary%20crossword

If you want to try sound, I suggest you read this tutorial:

Olá Fernanda!

I'm back in action again. I don't know why your IE gives you a list of letters like that :(. I've already had comments from Ronaldo and Maru and they could see the exercise. Strange things happen in cyberspace!

Now, regarding .mht and .html files:

If I save the exercise in .htm and send it to the server, I can't see the pictures because they don't open. I found out that if I save in .htm, I have to upload to the server a file and also a folder containing the images.

Saving in .mht, I don't need to upload to the server anything else, just the .mht file and the pictures show.

For my husband (he has a mind of an engineer), this was the simplest way.

If you go to my blog http://funenglish4kids.motime.com/, you can compare. The same exercise is in .mht; .htm *without* the folder; .htm *with* the folder. Open this last one and tell me if you can see it.

Am I making any sense?

Another question: in motime there's a storage capacity, but in blogger there isn't so I don't need to worry about that, am I right?

Bjnhs and thank you very much for your patience with me :),

Hi Susana!

Beautiful job, great pictures!!! Just two questions, I can't see the correct answers when I make a mistake. Is it possible to add that? And your "next" and "index" buttons go nowhere, is that right?

BTW, do you ever sleep? =)

Bjinhos,

BTW, do you ever sleep? =)

Eh, eh :)) You made me laugh Ronaldo :) Of course I do sleep. But I must confess that in the past three days I didn't do anything except being at the computer. You know, here we also have Carnival holidays and that gave me the time I didn't have before to dedicate to this fantastic group. Lessons begin tomorrow, so you'll see me here today :)

As for my Hot Potatoes crossword, I'm not sure why you can't see the correct answers when you make a mistake. Thank you for pointing that. I'll check! And yes, my "next" and "index" button go nowhere. I've thought about it, but I don't know how I can make the index and have all the exercises linked there. I'm a beginner :) Any suggestions?

Bjnh,

Susana (I saw your Carnival parade on the TV. Great animation!)

Hi

I didn't have time to participate much last week when you were all busy making materials and may even have missed a few digests so hope I'm not repeating anything anyone else has said. Has anyone looked at Clarity Authorplus Light. Of course AuthorPlus has to be paid for but Clarity do make the free Light version available. They used to just give you an access code but I've just looked on their website

http://www.authorplus.com/freecd/ and it seems you can now get a free CD-ROM with the program on from them.

Here are some activities I've made (to practise spelling)using it: http://www.clarityenglish.com/ap/johannastirling/ . I hadn't visited this for a while and was a bit disappointed to see that it seems users have to register now to access the activities. But still all free. It's very easy to use and what I like is that you can get a really professional looking result. It doesn't have the flexibility of HotPOts but it's much simpler and looks snazzier. One really irritating thing with the free version is that you can have pictures but you can't choose what they are so sometimes, no usually, the pictures are completely irrelevant to your activity. Oh, well, beggars can't....

Have fun.

Hi Johanna,

Maybe others have already known about it, but it is the first time I have heard about Clarity Authorplus Light. It looks so sophisticated with the colors and features; the scratch pad, the recording, the progress. You are right about the irrelevance of photos to exercises , although they remind me of Dekita.org great amazingly colorful pictures.Your excercise looks nice!

I will investigate further, but I thought to thank you first! I added a short note to your Chinswing thread , all in the past continuous!

Thanks for sharing it with us.

Hi all,

One tool I used for the first time at the beginnning of the academic year for new students to the university was Questionmaker http://questionwriter.com

The activity is to get students familiar with the building, their surroundings, their field of study and all the terminology used in English as quickly as possible. It took literally a few minutes to set up and I put it on wikispaces http://esieemmhh.wikispaces.com/

Hi Tere,

YES, this is exactly the one I was thinking of!! This is a very good site with vocab and reading activities and learners, young and older, love it. Many universities link to it.

Now, onto the next question - how to do it? Charles Kelly has a lot of activities too where with a single click you make sentences, songs, etc at http://www.manythings.org But what we are looking for is an easy 'click' solution to make these rather than integrating this all into a web page.

The search is on for a 'quick click solution' - whoever wins, gets an extra big gold star!!!

Qedoc

Moira Hunter

Moira Hunter

#2811

Hi,

Well, as nobody has replied to my previous email, I can only assume that nobody has used this yet.

I have fallen totally in love with it!

It seems to me be a wonderful tool for institutions. It's a bit heavy with the downloads but is worth it. There is a Quiz Maker programme and a Quiz Player programme. In order to do the quiz as a learner, you must have Quiz Player on the computer you are working on.

http://www.qedoc.com/downloads.php

There are other solutions to sharing the quiz which can be consulted on the website, including good old printing out. Have a look.

The possiblity of incorporating video and audio is really easy and quick and there is a vast range of question types. In a few minutes, I went from beginner to advanced level in the Quiz Maker as it is so user-friendly. I literally 'threw' together a nonsense quiz just to see how it works. Once your quiz is finished, you publish it.

Now, here is where it becomes interesting - this is an online community so you are encouraged to share your materials and you can use everything that is there (I just completed a quiz about American presidents - guess how I got on?). You can belong to the public community or create a private community for your quizzes.

As mentioned in my previous email, the one drawback at the moment is that when you publish, it has to be manually checked before being published to the public community (if you have chosen this option). They intend to stream this in the future. Once it's got the OK, it is listed for download.

http://www.qedoc.com/library/beta/beta.php

Mine under Moira Hunter My Rirst Test is listed towards the end.

This is then downloaded as a zip file, not opened, placed in the Player file in C Programme files Quedoc and it opens automatically in the Quiz Player, where you build up your library of activities.

There is evaluation, results, etc and you can print out your result sheets and obtain a certificate!

It sounds complicated but once you're in it, it is very easy!

They also intend to link up with Moodle XML format :-)

For those brave at heart, please have a look at my test where I have a short audio file (using Audacity), a Coca-Cola ad video, drag and drop, virtual keyboard, MCQ, as examples. This supports a tremendous amount of files too.

There is an upgrade link 'hot off the press' at

https://eduforge.org/projects/qedoc/ which is not available on their site right now as they have just sent this info to me now.

Sharon Betts

I had never seen this program and downloaded it today at work. There was no time to play, but it really looked like something that we may want to use with our teachers.

Thanks again!

One thing I wish the program would do is to change templates automatically (like in Blogger, where you can 'play' with different layouts very easily). At least, I haven't seen a way of doing the same with Sitekreator. It means that, once you've chosen your template, you can't switch to a different one - so you should consider your needs and preferences carefully before starting to work!

Working on Collaborative Projects

Aiden Yeh

Aiden Yeh

#3017

Maru mentioned in her previous message about seeing herself doing projects like what Rita and I have. With the kind of motivation that you and other webheads have, I don't think that you'd have problems in achieving this goal.

One thing, and I think it's THE most important factor, that makes Webheads tick is the spirit of camaraderie that somehow pulls us all together. It's the same spirit that gives birth to collaborative projects- big or small.

The project I shared with you last night was a big one- but the basic foundation is the same when we commit ourselves to doing a blended learning activity in the classroom.

I'll share with you one of the first projects I did back in 2002-this was after I joined Vance Steven' EVO session on Webheads. I think you all have met Michael Coghlan- this project was a class activity. If you follow the links below, you'll see how a simple project can come to life- and yes- leave an indelible mark on students' learning.

Here's how it all started...one message posted on the evonline webheads yahoogroup...

http://www.geocities.com/aidenyeh/michaelc/howitcame.htm

and see how everything went...

http://www.geocities.com/aidenyeh/michaelc/index.htm

These were the days where internet connection was bit slow. We didn't have Skype back then (or not that I know of). Bandwidth was the issue. Yet despite technological mishaps, there were other ways to patch the holes.

One activity led to another, and another, and another- all with Webheads.

The World Englishes project was a funded project- and I was selected to head it by our Department head- because I think she knew that I've got the skills. True. But these are the skills I learned from Webheads. In other words, I won't be where I am today without the help of Webheads. This is why this special group will always have a place in my heart.

So if you've got a project or a class activity in mind that requires collaboration with a colleague- just call on Webheads- they won't let you down.(sounds like an Ad- but hey- i'm an advocate- so there you go)

Congratulations again for completing this session.

I'll see you later in Alado.

hugs,

early project with other webheads including TPR with Dafne and Arnold M.

Dear Aiden,

You summarized our Webheads thoughts and advice brilliantly. I second you all the way!

The "spirit of camraderie", in other words, the "human touch", is truly what makes us tick. You and Rita were a true example of that yesterday, as were all our other guest speakers, in being there for us once again. Thank you!

Maru and all other participants, here's my piece of advice, which has been with for 10 years: "start small" (Ferdi Serim and Melissa Koch, co-authors of "NetLearning", a book that was very inspiring for me) and build on your experience. Take it one step at a time and you''l go far. :-)

Hugs all

Hi everyone

I know we've moved on from Chinswing and the like but I'm just catching up! I've just started a new thread there which I'd love you or your students to contribute to. It's at http://tinyurl.com/23hcbr (that's my first ever tinyurl - hope it works!).

The idea is to find out what people from all over the world are doing at one particular time. And that time is Monday 19th February 2007 at 1300 GMT. So of course you need to check what time that is where you are and then after that time go to Chinswing and record what you were doing at exactly that time. If you were sleeping there may not be much to say (unless you were having a good dream!) but if for example you were eating, tell us what you were tucking into. It would be lovely to hear from some of your students too. Great past continuous practice!

Thanks

Hi, everyone!

It's true that we haven't talked about photo stories and PhotoStory, Hala. It's a great software to create photo presentations or a tutorial (why not?). The software is very easy to use and audio (narration and music) can be embedded.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.m\spx

We have several examples of Webhead meetings in photo stories. Here's one of a Lisbon Webheads dinner where you will meet three of this week's mods and co-mods. In the last picture (from left to right): Cristina, Ramona, Fernanda, Joao (Teresa's husband), Teresa and Luisa.

Really nice, Teresa! If one of you webheads ever come to Brazil, don't forget to contact me before!!!

Now a question, have you guys ever used Windows Movie Maker (the one that comes in the windows package) for that purpose? How would you compare these two softwares (Windows Movie Maker and Microsoft Photo Story)?

Sharon Betts

Sharon Betts

#2572

We use both Photo Story and Movie maker on our windows machines for students to do digital storytelling. Photo Story is really made for digital images and Movie Maker for movies (camcorders). Of course you can put still images into Movie Maker and get a result very much like Photo Story. Photo Story is much easier to use overall - quick with clean results. Students from 10 -100 enjoy working with it.

There are many online tutorials for Photo Story - some are linked Agenda page of my storytelling presentation:

Ronaldo,

I've used Movie Maker and Photo Story.

Movie Maker is the complete thing - movement and sound, music, clips to edit so that you can create special effects. Photo Story means you are deliberately restricting yourself to still pictures and spoken comment. It can be very effective.

One of my photo stories - Introducing Nils - which I made for my granddaughter, is at:

http://www.slidestory.com/?page=detail&cid=161

I must confess, I rather like it - some everyday adventures of a blue hippopotamus with my voice!

The Movie Maker film I made with contributions from Carla and her students and it is to be found at:

I enjoyed making this so very much!

I use Windows Movie Maker a lot in my classes. They make reports on historical events and for graduation every year the seniors make one of picutes of all their school years and it is shown at graduation. Of couse not every school could do this as we only have 79 students from grades k-12. This year I have 3 seniors graduating.

Technology Use at Schools

Paul Mountjoy

I'm in Thailand and work in a northern Thai university as an English teacher. I used to work in the computer field before I became a teacher so the kind of stuff you are all doing and learning about here in baw07 fascinates me. I've used things like Moodle and skype before and I have a wiki for my own use. I joined baw07 to learn more and so I wouldn't feel so lonely as nobody else in my university uses these technologies and don't seem in the least bit interested in using them in the future. I really don't know why that is. How about the rest of you. Do you have support for using these technologies in your institutions?

Hi Paul,

Good question! This should make a starter for a new discussing here!

In fact, most of us do not find support as the situation is like yours, or maybe worse!

#2681

Hi, Paul

I am Nelba from Argentina and I understand what you feel because the same happens in my city. I started persuading school authorities to allow me to include activities using PCs and Internet, but without a possitive result. They seem to be interested, but I have to do all the work and use my own computer and pay for the internet connection if I want to use new techs. I even had to do the advertising! I really feel blue and depressed. Only BaW07 cheers me up to go on learning and exploring the web because I find friendly people with the same interests.

Hi Paul

I am a Teacher in a secondary school in Lima.. Peru South America, and thanks God I have support and the principal is interested in using technology for our students... even though she is not expert... We have Internet access for students and teachers.. plus this teen generation was born with mobiles..pc´s..software... internet...cd´s..mp3...now ipods....and the list continues......usb...etc..etc.. We can not be out of this world...

Hi Paul,

it seems yours is not an isolated case... I'm lucky to run my own business, so I do not depend on other people to try new things! But it always amazes me to realize that, in general, most educational systems around the world are still stuck somewhere in the 19th century, while the rest of the world (including students!!!) are already light-years ahead. It's not a matter of simply adopting technology as if it was the solution to all problems; what bothers me is that there are those who don't even want to try and experiment. Funny, when we think that learning is essentially about experimenting and changing attitudes, isn't it?

Fernanda Rodrigues

Fernanda Rodrigues

#2748

Hi Monica

I entirely agree with you. How can teachers expect their students to be curious and feel enthusiasm for learning if they are themselves closed to new experiments and avoid learning?

Teresa Almeida d'Eça

Teresa Almeida d'Eça

#2636

Hi, Paul!

I've been in your situation for 10 years now. Up to last month only the Math teachers used computers, but mainly for Excel and very rarely connected to the internet for any task.

Now there's a project going on with about 8 teachers from different departments involved. They're using a Moodle to upload files with exercises their students can do on their own. Some are using PPoint in their classes and one has a blog with his 8th grade students, but I haven't seen it.

However, no one is using the Internet on a regular basis, as I've been doing for years. On the other hand, over the years nobody has acknowledged te work my students and I have been doing, especially the work of the students, which I find sadly amazing, but will not comment on...

Paul, from previous discussions in the Webheads in Action group I think that this is a worldwide problem. Unfortunately!!!

Elisabeth Fernandes

Elisabeth Fernandes

#2638

Hi Paul,

Indeed, as Teresa mentions, this does seem to be a worldwide problem. So, Paul, don't feel like you are the only one in this position. It is a battle many teachers are fighting, but, with role models such as BAWers, hopefully things will improve. And we can offer each other help and support.

Derya

Derya Kulavuz-Onal

Hello all

I couldn't participate in this discussion when it was posted as I was not able to catch up with all the emails at that time. But while threading, it caught my attention and I wanted to post a comment.

Not to surprise, the situation is the same in my school. But the reason is always the money. Although I work at a Technical University, the administrators always say that they could not find financial support to buy high-tech equipment in our school. So, we have computers at computer labs to enjoy out of class and thus we can only benefit from the internet to develop materials. We dont have computers or internet access in classes. This also discourages all the teachers who support implementing technology into teaching.

Questions & Answers

#2656

Dear all,

Last year I tried Survey Monkey at the lab with different groups of students. It was a survey they were supposed to answer during the first class about their computer habits. The problem was that after the first group of students completed the surveys their answers would remain on the computer when the next group came in. We tried refreshing the screens, but nothing happened. Has this happened to any of you? Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

We'd love to try the survey again this year!

The Language option indicates the primary language for discussion within a group. If you wish to have discussions take place in a specific language, be sure to select it as the primary language setting for your group. To change the language setting for your group:

-- Click "Management" in the left hand navigation bar (note that this link will only appear if you are the owner of the group or a moderator with the appropriate privileges).

-- Under the "Group Settings" section in the upper right, click "Description & Apperance"

-- Click the "Edit" link next to "Description"

-- Choose the appropriate language from the "Primary Language" drop down.

Hello Everyone,

I went to CLA Language Center, Interactive Exercise Makers and made a matching exercise called Application Forms, please check it out at the following link and let me know what do you think.

http://elsiesgi.cla.umn.edu/match/application_page.htm

I did not know what to do to see who answers and check them to grade students or a tutorial to follow. There are several forms that I did not understand: Gloss Maker, Cloze Maker, Eval Maker and Multy Maker. I choose Match Maker because it was the one I understood. Does anyone works with this site? Or a place where I can check what are those forms for and how to use them?

Fernanda Rodrigues

Fernanda Rodrigues

#2698

Hi Maru!

With glossmaker you can create texts with annotations. This is an example:

http://elsiesgi.cla.umn.edu/gloss/test_area.htm

With clozemaker you create cloze exercises, where words were left blank in a text.

Example: http://elsiesgi.cla.umn.edu/cloze/teste2_page.htm

With Evalmaker you create Short anwer questions.

Example: http://elsiesgi.cla.umn.edu/eval/teste3_page.htm

With Multimaker you create multiple choice exercises.

Example: http://elsiesgi.cla.umn.edu/multi/teste4_page.htm

In my opinion this tool is poor compared to Hotpotatoes, but it's just my opinion

Webcam

Holly Dilatush

#2734

Yesterday I finally installed my webcam and tried an experimental video and a few still shots. I could _not_ find help (it's a Logitech).

I did manage to figure out myself how to add a video capture to my RealPlayer library and then to save it to a folder and then to upload it to my Moodle.

But I need to find tips on how to save it best -- .wmv? or other?

Is there a way to best save it/them smallest size?

And how to save a photo/still shot? When I right click I'm given the option to save to a disk or to print -- but isn't there a way to save direct to My pictures folder?

Anyone have quick answers for me or can direct me to a Help index/resource? There's NO "Help" button or file I can find with my install.

Moira Hunter

Moira Hunter

#2746

Hi Holly,

When you install your Logitech, there is a Quickcam folder placed in your Images folder and each photo you take is automatically placed there, as well as in your Picture Gallery when you have Logitech open to take pictures.

The same applies for your videos - In My Videos, there is a QuickCam folder and you can find the video there, as well as in the Video Gallery if you have Logitech open to make a video.

As for saving in which format, the videos are automatically saved in wmv. This is good for editing and adding effects with the programme in your pc (can't remember where you are mac or pc). But you have to be careful of size.

Holly Dilatush

#2777

Yes! There it is -- I just missed it among my folders, since I didn't name it QuickCam -- probably missed that tidbit during the install, when I'm sure I was advised of it --

THANK YOU, Moira!

--View HTML tag

--Accept the terms of conditions

--Choose the time zone you wish to display

--Choose the size of your clock

--Select the code in te first window and with the right button of your mouse, and copy it.

Hi, Ana!

I just left a comment in your blog. Nice! :-)

To embed a clock and a world map to the left frame (so they will always be visible), you:

-- click Motime (top left) to go into edit mode

-- click "Blog Center" in the little window that comes up

-- click the "Template" tab (top of the page) in the new page

-- scroll down to "Left Column Begins Here"

-- insert the code you are given for the clock and the map

-- click the "Save changes" button when you are finished.

Hi Ana,

If you intend to embed this in the side bar, you need to go into Template and scroll down and then copy paste the url for the clock and map there and save :-)

Sharon Betts

Sharon Betts

#2749

The easiest way to get a clock is to paste the code from the clock site into the source of a new post for your blog.

Click the Source tab (on the top left of the post box) - then paste the code and Publish (you can Preview first to see if it is working)

#2722

Hi Sarah

I'm afraid that, as a student, you can't edit a course on moodle, only as a teacher or admin.

Holly Dilatush

#2733

Sarah, Fernanda, all,

It's true, that only administrators (or those with admin access) can create / change the page -- but for those who might have this access and not be sure -- I chose the "Wood" themes by follwing these steps:

1) log in

2) turn on editing

3) go to Administration panel

4) go to Configuration

5) click on Themes

6) choose the Theme you want and click on "Choose"

voila!

tip? -- I have played around with different looks -- have found usually that I prefer two columns rather than three -- although I've shifted back to three column look just recently...

Anyway -- to move blocks around to the configuration you want, turn on editing, then use the arrows to move them (for a two column look, send all blocks from left to the right or vice-versa.

Hope this helps someone, somewhere.

What I _really_ want to master is how to save my own theme -- but I don't know enough HTML or don't have enough comfort level/expertise level to understand how to make that happen. someday...

Moira Hunter

you should use the discussion url to direct people to your discussion thread. Anyone can click on your photo to see your profile.

Chinswing is an in-browser method of recording voice so you could add a link to the url in Moodle, i.e. have the word "discussion" hyperlinked to the discussion url on the chinswing server.

Just out of interest: what prompts YG to send digests. I'd thought it would be one per day, but it's usually three a day and sometimes only a short time apart. For example Digest 149 atrrived about 40 mins after 148 and only had one message in it. This is not a complaint at all - I just wondered.

Maru's Questions

Maru del Compo

Maru del Compo

#2954

1.-- Do our YH group will continue working? I mean, if I send a message to baw07@... will it be read?

2.-- Voice tools. I have a myChingo, Springdoo and Evoca account. If I post my Mychingo to my blogger site, can I go to check the messages to my MyChingo site or do I have to visit the blog to listen to the messages? If I create two blogs, do I have to visit both or can the messages from them be sent to my Mychingo account?

3.-- How can we protect a wiki?

4.-- Which programs or tools presented in the course are somehow linked to one another? For example, Ronaldo mentioned "...I liked about blogger is that it is so connected to google account that I could see you comments in my gmail at the moment you posted them (without having to work with RSS feeds and stuff...)." Do I have to open a gmail account? I am tangled in the Web!

5.-- My browser has at the top 10 cm used by many icons. How can I make that dissapear when I need my window wider?

6.-- I created a Guestbook on MySlide which lead me to open an account at MySpace. At the moment I verifyed my yahoo account there was already an unknown contact, my profile was set as single, not wanting children, etc. I do not want my yahoo mail drawned with swamp. Which other sites allow unwanted visitors?

I wonder if I can help you with question 5? If you are using Mozilla Firefox browser, you can download a plug-in called "tiny Menu". It collapses the menubar into the word "menu" in the top left corner. When you click on "menu", the choices all appear in a drop-down list. I use this on my laptop and am very happy with this arrangement -- it's great having extra viewing space.

Hi, Maru!

I'll only answer the first question due to complete lack of time. All BaW07 sites - YG, wiki, blog, forum, etc, etc - will remain online "ad eternum"!!!!

Not to worry! And no need to start feeling "saudade" (longing). No need to start missing anything or anybody! Tomorrow is only the last day of the 6-week workshop, but... Monday is the first day of you new life with your extended BaW07 cyberfamily! :-)

Moira Hunter

Moira Hunter

#2978

Hi Maru,

I'm sorry, this email seemed to have missed my atttention, so here goes with some answers :-)

1.-- Yes it will!

2.-- You get an email notification telling you that you've received a message and you can also do both of your suggested ideas. If you embed MyChingo on a blog, wiki and moodle for example with the same account, the same messages can be heard on either support

3.-- It depends on which wiki you are using. Different wikis offer different privacy settings. They can be public, for groups and totally private for example.

4.-- The best thing Maru is just to take your time and explore the different tool options before using them. Look at the FAQ and help pages first and see what you want for your needs

5.-- Go to the top of your screen, click on View and then Tool Bar and 'unclick' the ones you don't want. Play around with it to see what you can do - it doesn't disappear

6.-- LOL - many, so you have to read the settings carefully when you set up any account

Message for the PBWiki Sufferers

Moira Hunter

Moira Hunter

#2894

Hi all,

It seems that we are certainly not the only ones suffering from 'bugs' which PBwiki is experiencing having now officially released the rich text version (also referred to as WYSIWYG).

Our wiki was created well before the beginning of this workshop using the wikistyle version (or classic version). Since the recent release of the rich text version, in theory you should be able to 'swap' from one to the other at the top right of the edit page. Some of you have seen that this is not what happens with disastrous results. Hence our recommendation to stay with the classic version for this BaW07 wiki.

If you look here at the comments at the beginning, someone has submitted the following scream for help :

"When I switched to point and click and then switched back, the formatting of the page was changed. Is there a way to return to the original formatting? (Ray Rodrigues, Homepage, 02.21.07 - 8:57 am "

http://newfaq.pbwiki.com/The%20FAQ

I've seen similar screams of anger and shouts for help elsewhere.

Here, you can see that the rich text version needs careful handling at times too in Tips of the Week

http://blog.pbwiki.com/?cat=12

It is also recommended that you have the latest Firefox or IE installed and mentions that it doesn't like Safari for example.

Well worth having a look through and knowing that those who have experienced problems are not alone!!

Hi, Moira!

Thanks for all the precious info you sent us. I've been looking at the files and have bookmarked them.

To all BaW07 participants, a request: from now till Sunday, and from Monday Feb. 26 onwards, "the first day of your new life!!!", please stick to the Classic editor, as Moira suggested. I believe it will avoid lots of frustrations, at least till things with both editors in pbwiki normalize.

Listening to this song brought tears to my eyes. Why?? Well, this was my wedding song! My very good friend sang it at our wedding, (her version was more like Joan Baez with guitar too), and we have tried to follow the words in our life. When I last saw my friend she said that at that time she didn't know how appropriate this song would be to exemplify our lives.

And now you have chosen this song as your message ..... it just touched my heart.

Dear all,

I'd love to `come' to the graduation party but I am sorry I am unable to attend because of the time difference as usual (Sydney, GTM+11), but I send a basket of love to all of you as my gift to the party.

I just wanted to say thank you to the amazing coordinators, moderators, co-moderators and participants. This workshop was a wonderful journey for me and I truly appreciate your caring and generosity. It is amazing how much I have learned in such a short time even though I was well behind and mostly lurking. I am not saying I didn't have enough time because it is a bad excuse and I am ashamed of myself!

Dear Dafne, Teresa, Moira, Hala, Cristina, Cora,

Thank you for another wonderful BAW session! Every year, there isn't enough time to take in all the opportunities, and every year baw manages to broaden my horizons. Thank you so much for giving us all so much.

While conducting research on the textbook (ESL) I'm currently working on, I have found a real shift in the way blogs are used--whereas a couple of years ago bloggers were still experimenting with this new medium, I am finding now that serious bloggers are providing very professional resources in all different fields by offering links to recent news articles, websites and information about developments. Furthermore, links are provided for text, audio and video sources. It's fascinating to me to see how different the research I'm doing now is compared to the research I did for my first book two years ago.

And I can't wait to meet many of you in Seattle!

I wanted to say a hearty congratulations to the webheads class of 2007. You are extremely committed to the cause, as evidenced by the threads. What a wonderful opportunity to be part of this community.

Some of you were wondering if all things will end after the graduation ??? It will not happen! I hope to see some , no all, of you at least once a week at TappedIn.org on Sunday mornings. We have wonderful chats and welcome all webheads from all classes. That is where you will see the sharing continue. Plus, there are the Yahoo messages. Continue with the digests and keep adding questions, comments, and sharing of great ideas. This doesn't end, it is just the beginning. Proud to be a Webhead from the class of 2006. Over and out.

Dear Webheads,

This year I was not a good student, but I was enjoying to read every emails arrived in to my inbox. Using web tools and enjoying to learn how colleagues around the world use them in their teaching brought me a great surprise this year - I am nominated to go to Seattle together as a part of Central Asian delegation. I look forward to meeting many BaWers there.

We can always keep informed about each other and share our experience using new tools via this group ;)

With many thanks to all moderators for their hard work!

I'm happy to be in Sixth week :)

During the second and third week I thought I couldn't finish the whole workshop.

There are (still) a lot of tools to explore but I have learned a lot of things and the most beautiful thing to me was This Group Spirit, that make me improve my work in so many ways.

My head is full of information and ideas I want to do during this year and a long To-Do List.

This workshop is not over and We have to do the xtra effort but My God!!! It feels so good to be in the Sixth Week!!! :) http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/comix.html?comix_id=1199272258

Dear Aiden and Rita,

On behalf of Dafne and myself, BaW07 mods, co-mods and participants, I'd like to"thank you" both warmly for two wonderful presentations on blended learning.

As someone commented, they wrapped up the content of these 6 weeks superbly.

Here's the page I created for both of you!

Today I saw a door open, a new path for teaching. I know I will not be doing what Rita and Aiden are dong in a short term but I saw me doing it in the future. Rita mentioned, very accuratelly, that we need to collaborate and know very well our partners in order to carry on a project like hers.

Love: Maru
