Hala Fawzi #2176 02/11/2007 | Dear everyone, Week 5 team at Becoming a Webehad 2007 would like to congratulate your survival! This indicates that you will make it to the graduation ceremony! If you would like to know more about what type of hands will guide you through this week, you may go directly here: http://baw07.pbwiki.com/moderators Look for us: Cristina Costa, Hala Fawzi as moderators and our co-moderators; Elisabeth Fernandes , Fernanda Rodrigues and Ramona Dietrich . Our Queen of threads for this week, who has voluntarily joined us, will be Sasha Sirk . Thank you Sasha! Great to have you with us! What do we have for you during this week? This week we will have one special synchronous (real time) event that will be held at Alado http://www.alado.net/webheads, presented by Dr. Isabel Perez, in Spain, who will talk to us about different resources for creating on- and offline custom-made materials for our students. You may check out here further here: http://baw07.pbwiki.com/Chat_sessions#Week5 Please add your name in the YG Database to tell us that you are attending this session. As we consider this week is a more practical one, there is only one suggested reading with another optional one. Both reading are very related to our topic, so they will add to your experience more than you can imagine! The discussion of these reading will be in our forum: http://www.miumu.com/phpbb/baw07.html We will be exploring together a collection of software for creating interactive exercises, online surveys, quizzes, and online sheets. To know what you are supposed to do, go to our week 5 page on the wiki: http://baw07.pbwiki.com/week5 You may choose the most appropriate type of exercise or quiz you could use with your students. Please share with the group the best ways of implementing these tools into our classrooms. A collection of useful online resources for your classes will be provided later , so as to give you the chance to explore the tools first! To guarantee that you could have many useful resources that will be online for you after the session ends, all links to resources will be added to: http://baw07participants.pbwiki.com/toolsexplored This week is slightly different in that; we offer (((((((((Hugs )))))))))) for those of you who managed to: 1-Finish readings and post reflections to the Forum. 2-Create an online exercise, a quiz, a survey, an online sheet, etc. 2.Suggest a useful online resource to use with students. 3.Help a webhead in this week with any of the activities. Sorry, we have no kudos (kisses), because we do not want you to bother with any lipstick marks left on your cheeks ;-). It feels good when you become way ahead! So, try to start working from now!!Week 5 is calling you! We hope this will be a rich, fruitful and enjoyable week! Week 5 Team! |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2180 (Response to #2173) 02/11/2007 | Hi, Moira, Chrissan and Mabel! "Thank you" and "congrats" on your fabulous work this week. It was very "smooth sailing", but Daf and I know well at what expense that happens. Everything went very well, with lots of great presentations and new tools explored. A special "congrats" to Mabel, because, as Moira reminded us this afternoon in the EVO Skypecast, it was her first co-moderation job, and she did very well. I wasn't able to follow the week as I'd wished, but the message flow and the subject lines were enough to show the commitment and enthusiasm. "Thank you" also to the participants for being so involved. It's overwhelming, but it pays, you'll see. Luckily I was able to make the presentations and really enjoyed them. "Thank you" to all guest speakers for being here for us for the first time - Jane Bozarth and Geoff Kaye - and once again - Jonathan Finkelstein and Andy Pincon. Week 5 is also in 5 great hands - what a coincidence! - and we have a great guest speaker with an eye-opening presentation. Don't miss Isabel's presentation on Thursday. On behalf of Daf and myself, "thank you" again on a job well done. And "break a leg" to the next week's mods and co-mods: Hala and Cristina,Fernanda, Ramona and Elisabeth. |
Cora Chen #2185 02/11/2007 | Dear Moira, Chrissan and Mabel, What a fantastic job you have done! Congratulations on your successful voyage! Moira has done wonderful planning for all the activities for week 4, which has led to a fun, exciting voyage of learning. Chrissan and Mabel have also helped to make everything go smoothly. Thank you all ! I wish I had had the time to participate in all of your activities during Week 4. Due to the time zone differences and my busy work schedule, I was able to attend only one of the live sessions given by guest speakers. I hope I will have the chance to try out all of the voice tools when I have more time. Thank you again! :-))) |
Angeles Berman #2198 (Response to #2185) 02/11/2007 | Hello Moira and team :) Congratulations on the wonderful work you have done during this week. I can listen to different speakers, if not in a live event but after. i was at some of the conferences, tried new tools, learnt a lot of new things I didn't know they existed before. Best of all, you are so enthusiastic all the time, that you motivated me to read and use tools, even though I'm shy and don't like to use webcams or mics :) it was hard work but we did it!!!! Thanks a lot for everything!!! |
Mabel Quiroga #2195 02/11/2007 | Hi everyone, Week 4 is coming to an end. For me, it's been a very busy (almost hectic) butvery exciting week. Virtual classrooms and voice tools are probably the area where most of us have less experience, and there's also more demand of technological capabilities on ourside. At the same time, it's the closest you can get to replicating the atmosphere of a face to face class (that is, if you add, in Moira's words, the human touch). So I think it's worth the effort and hiccups!! I'd also like to thank the Guest Speakers for their inspiring presentations and not forgetting that we are not tech savvy people, just teachers wanting to develop professionally to improve our teaching and our students' learning This session's participants are so enthusiastic and adventurous ! It's a real pleasure to learn with you! I would love to go interacting and exploring webtools with you all in the next few weeks and months (my skype and yahoocontact list are really crowded now):) True, I came on board kind of last minute but I could cope with my share of the work thanks to hard working, humorous Moira and Chrissan, so it was a bit ofwork but I had so much fun and learnt so much!!! A final thank you note to coordinators Daf (I would have never been able to produce pages in the wiki if I hadn't counted on your samples and your help editing ), Teresa for wonderful tutorials and warm presence in the conference rooms and moderators Cora, Cris, Hala and Dennis Denos and all comoderators forbehind (and on) the scenes warmth and support. Looking forward to week 5! |
Chrissan #2205 02/12/2007 | Thank you BaWers and friends for taking part in all the week 4 activities! We all learn so much, my new favourites are definitely Chinswing and Gabjam! It has been a pleasure working with you all and Moira's exceptional planning abilities together with comodding partner Mabel made it all possible. So let's welcome Hala and Cora and take a plunge into week 5!! |
Sarah Braxton #2244 02/12/2007 | Week 4 moderators - please accept my appreciation for your hard work!
|
Maru #2182 02/11/2007 | Hi Nelba! I liked your idea, to place a clock on my blog. I followed the directions given by Dafne (all the way from Spain!) I clicked on the link, then clicked on: Want a clock for your blog? I chose the clock and clicked on HTML code. In the first attempt, the clock did not show so I went and copied the optional second code to embed and pasted it. Once in my blog, when I hit the button"publish" a dialog saying that the code was not closed showed up. All I did was to add to the end of the string and it worked! I was not asked for a credit card number or anything of the sort. Please send me the link to your blog to visit. Thanks for working so hard and for being an example for me to follow. |
Nelba #2208 02/12/2007 | Thanks Maru 4 the info. I will try to doit. send me the address of your blog, please. |
Nelba #2209 (Response to #2208) 02/12/2007 | Sorry, I forgot 2 send U the blog address. Here it goes |
Maru #2187 02/11/2007 | I want to thank Hala, Mary, Amy and Gladys. They all left comments on my messy blog, I really appreciate the time you took to do so. Nelba and Dafne's messages helped me to place a clock on my blog. The conversation about tags made clear that it is a skill I need to practice.I could not join you for Saturday's live sessions, I will review the recordings. Thanks for posting them!! Least but not last, thanks to Moira's and week 4 team's excellent job! |
Moira Hunter #2203 02/12/2007 | Hi Sarah, I apologise but I have just heard your message you left on the voice board in our BaW07 blog. You can always post message to any motime blog as an unlogged in user (so without an account) but you must remember to type in your name at the end of your message. Just click on 'Comment' and start typing :-) If you want to register for an account, you use your own email address and your own username and you choose your own password. If you've heard nothing from Motime, try to open another account. Normally their reply is automatic when setting up an account. |
Mabel Quiroga #2204 02/12/2007 | Hi Moira and everybody, I'm sorry I forgot to include the link! |
Moira Hunter #2225 02/12/2007 | Hi, I've been and posted a request ;-) |
Nelba #2206 (Response to #2204) 02/12/2007 | I left a message in your blog. Good and fast work :) |
Nelba #2207 (Response to #2206) 02/12/2007 | Have U already written about the other topics you mention? tango, men and football, women...? |
Mabel Quiroga #2246 02/12/2007 | Dear Carla, Dennis, Hala, Nelba, Maru, Moira & Tere Many thanks for your comments on my blog. I've added two more posts on the same topic. I got carried away by your appreciation:) Moira, I sent a motime email about your request: d'accord!!! |
Cora Chen #2249 02/12/2007 | Dear Mabel, Your blog is fantastic with very interesting cultural information.Congratulations! I just left comments there. :-))) |
Nelba #2223 02/12/2007 | Hi, everyone! I am happy as a dog with two tails because I have finally inserted the clock to my blog!!!! Thanks to Dennis, Maru and Mabel for having left comments on my blog. I really invite all bawers and their students to have a look and leave their comments at: It may be the beginning of interaction between students of different countries. Thanks to all who be patient and helped me with this clock! |
Ramona Dietrich #2224 (Response to #2223) 02/12/2007 | Hi Nelba, Great news. It's such a great feeling when we finally are able to do it! I'd love to visit your blog and leave a comment but there's a problem with the link you left. Could you please double check it because I'd love to visit you and your students in cyberspace. |
Angeles Berman #2226 (Response to #2224) 02/12/2007 | Congratulations!!!! I have to find the instructions to insert one. Good work :) |
Nelba #2264 02/13/2007 | I have left the instructions in the wiki playground. If you can´t find it, let me know. Nelba :) By the way, have you left a comment in my blog? Please, do: http://n21810.motime.com/ |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2227 (Response to #2226) 02/12/2007 | Hi, Nelba! Your link is missing .com at the end. ;-) It should read http://n21810.motime.com/ I just left a short comment. |
Moira Hunter #2228 (Response to #2227) 02/12/2007 | Hi Nelba, Thanks for the chat and I'm imagining you with two tails now ;-) I've left amessage :-) |
Dafne #2229 (Response to #2228) 02/12/2007 | Dear Nelba, I just left a message in your blog :-) You are GMT -3! |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2231 (Response to #2229) 02/12/2007 | Congratulations, Nelba! There's the end missing in your URL, it should be:http://n21810.motime.com/ Beijinhos |
Jennifer Verschoor #2236 (Response to #2231) 02/12/2007 | Hello Nelba, I just took a look at the link www.clocklink.com and there are a lot of great clocks you can add to your blog.Yours looks great. I left a comment and also added a clock to my blog. |
Gladys Baya #2330 02/13/2007 | Try Google Desktop widgets, I was there today and they have plenty ofclocks in all styles and fashions! |
Gladys Baya #2291 02/13/2007 | Just post here or email to remind me when more comments are needed, Hala! My pleasure... |
Gladys Baya #2293 02/13/2007 | Hala's comment about her students' reaction to her blog has inspired me. I have three class blogs kept by students I'm likely to meet again as from next month, when the school year starts again in Argentina. Right now I'm working on enhancing the templates and adding widgets... Wouldn't it be great if a few of you might drop by and leave a comment on those entries from 2006 who have not received any comments yet? That'd certainly encourage my students to try blogging more enthusiastically this year! I'd comment myself, but they don't "take it seriously", as they can already interact with me f2f, you know... These are the blogs: http://caereaders.blogspot.com (book, movies and music reviews) http://ethicsforteachers.blogspot.com (EFL teacher trainees about to graduate discuss issues on ethics in teaching) http://lcbttceducators.blogspot.com/ (EFL teacher trainees who have just entered college discuss how different educators have influenced them in their views) Thanks in advance! If you pop in, don't forget to sign and add where you're from, to surprise my students... |
Dennis Newson #2296 (Response to #2293) 02/13/2007 | Good idea, Gladys. Hala. Can you give us your blog URL again? |
Hala Fawzi #2319 (Response to #2313) 02/13/2007 | Hi Dennis , This is the URL of our class blog: http://tagananet2.blogspot.com/ Muhanned's blog which he created by playing around with the widgets and blogger before showing them how to it: Thanks again for leaving a comment. |
Hala Fawzi #2312 (Response to #2300) 02/13/2007 | My dear friend Gladys, Your wish is my command! I will do it later and I will lead my students to add some comments too after they come back after their two week vacation! Interesting blogs! |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2300 (Response to #2297) 02/13/2007 | Gladys, I'll try to leave a comment in your blogs in the next couple of days. |
Maru #2348 02/13/2007 | Hi Gladys! I left comments at your students blogs. They are very nice! The content isinteresting. I also added them to our wiki at the page "Tools explored by participants" as many of us will surely visit them later and that way will be easy for all to find them. Congratulations for your work!! |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2297 02/13/2007 | Hi, Dennis! Guess what? Muhanned, one of Hala's students, has already left a comment in the "Have Fun with English! 2" blog and he also left one in Rodrigo's blog, an 11-year-old student of mine. Isn't this fantastic? :-) All BaW07 participants are invited to leave comments in my teacher-student blogs. Please include you name, city and country. http://fwe2.motime.com/ (extracurricular blog) http://call05-06.motime.com/ (CALL lessons) |
Hala Fawzi #2313 (Response to #2312) 02/13/2007 | Aha! So that what kept him away when I was explaining how to create a wiki page for the group today at the lab!!! He is such a fast learner! I adore him! Thanks for telling us to praise his work tomorrow! |
Monica #2406 02/14/2007 | Hi everyone, I'd just like to thank you all for visiting my blog and trying the activities (forum, quiz, chinswing...) and leaving your comments. Feel free to invite your own students to participate! Special thanks to Linda, Elisabeth, Maru, Berta and Moira (did I forget anyone?) for your views on films X novels. I'm sure my studetns will enjoy listening to you! |
Gladys Baya #2444 02/15/2007 | To Dennis, Mary, Muhanned, Berta, SharonBetts and Isabel: You visited my class blogs and left some comments for my students... All I can say is THANKS A MILLION!i don't know what surprises me more: the fact that you disinterestedly gave some of your time to do so, or the fact that you replied practically within 24 hours, which means you, unlike me, are really reading messages as they get posted! Thanks again! also on behalf of my students.... |
Berta #2476 02/15/2007 | Dear Gladys, my pleasure. I think the three blogs have excellent objectives in mind and I hope to go back once in a while to see how ideas are developed by your students. You have provided them with a very effective place to express themselves. Cariños and keep up the excellent work you always do. |
Horacio Idarraga Gil #2452 02/15/2007 | Dear baw07 and b4b friends : some days ago Melba (or Nelba) said she was happier than dog with two tails because she had put a clock in her blog. Well, let me tell you that I have not just a dog. I have seven, two of them with GMT time and the others with venezuelan time. The reason? When I was trying to download the clock, it never told me it was ready, so I repeated the operation till I got tired and gave it up. Warm hugs from Venezuela, the land of the sweetest oranges in the world. Horacio. |
Cristina Costa #2453 (Response to #2452) 02/15/2007 | Really nice. Loved your clocks! ;) |
Sharon Betts #2454 (Response to #2453) 02/15/2007 | Horacio, That is one timely blog. |
Hala Fawzi #2455 (Response to #2454) 02/15/2007 | I love them all! I left a comment. |
Elisabeth Fernandes #2460 (Response to #2455) 02/15/2007 | Hey Horacio, Do you have the time?I love your choice of clock......... or rather all the clocks. At least you'llalways know what time it is........ |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2467 (Response to #2460) 02/15/2007 | Lol! Horatio, the King of clocks! You are ready to start a business! The sweetest oranges in the world? I bet you have never tried the Portugues ones...;) |
Monica #2468 02/15/2007 | Hi Horacio, I loved the clocks! Aren't you glad you decided to give up after the seventh attempt? If you were stubborn, you might have ended up having a blog with a hundred clocks!!! :) |
Gladys Baya #2521 02/16/2007 | Thanks for your comments, Berta, and thanks to Elisabeth Fernandes, too! Im meeting my students again during March, so they'll be excited! (I'll be emailing them the news anyway, but not all of them checkemail during the summer!).... But next week I'm sharing these blogs with my colleagues (we have in-service training sessions). I hope they believe you're real, as Carla Arena once told on another list some teachers thought she made up commentators from all over the world in her blogs to impress them! :-P |
Susana Araujo #2577 02/17/2007 | Hi all! I'm working on my Motime blog http://funenglish4kids.motime.com/ and I'm trying to embedd a slide show in the messages section, because I don't want it to appear in the right or left columns. But the problem seems that the Post messages section doesn't allow to publish HTML codes. Am I right? I can get the slide show in HTML code or in a link form. But I don't want a link. I want the slide to appear in the blog. What should I do? From my past experience with Blogger http://businessenglish4u.blogspot.com/ I can post messages in HTML. In the Post messages section I choose HTML or Compose mode. However, Motime seems to be different... there isn't a HTML post mode, is it? Can you help me? Thank you veeery much! |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2579 (Response to #2577) 02/17/2007 | Hi, Susana! I don't know if I understand you right, but this may be a clue. In Motime, when you are writing a new message, there is a "Fonte" button(Source) on the top left. This will allow you to insert .html code in your post, so you can insert the slide show with the code that is given. I just tried inserting a code in the Comments area and it works. No link shows. Just a clickable ecard (my experiment). I remembered that a friend form Brazil had once inserted her photo in the Comments area, that's why I decided to try this code. So... it works both ways! :-) |
Susana Araujo #2581 (Response to #2579) 02/17/2007 | Olá Teresa! Yes, I was missing that detail. Thank you so much! I used the Source button to insert the slideshow code. However, I may have done something wrong as instead of pictures in it I keep getting this message: "The Slideshow code seems goofed up. Please embed the code again." I did it several times and it didn't work. My curiosity made me look up the meaning for "goof up" in the dictionary and it says: to make a sillymistake. Duhhh?!? I guess I'm missing something... and making a silly mistake... :-(Thanks anyway for your help Teresa ;-) I'll keep working on it and I'll try to figure out what's wrong. Byeee ;-) |
Monica #2585 02/17/2007 | Hi everyone, this is such a fantastic group! I'd like to thank all of you who, despite your very busy famiily and professional lives, have been regularly checking and commenting on my blogs! Your opinions and ideas have been incredibly helpful. Thanks a million! Um abraço, Monica Veado (Brazil) http://maisimpressoesdigitais.blogspot.com">http://manyreviews.blogspot.com

Sarah (Germany) #2230 02/12/2007 | Good evening to everyone and especially Cris, Hala Maru, and Moira for their very prompt replies, encouraging words and help. Stubborness has finally paid off!!!. I am starting to navigate around the baw spaceship, flying through cyberspace with all your help and guidance, and have finally found a place to dock and beam my first shuttle adventure!:) Here it is; my first wiki. http://sarahj.pbwiki.com/ I chose the theme valentines day as it is something that will also be taking place this week and I just wanted a somewhat neutral theme that didn`t involve teaching ESL. I have tried (unsuccessfully) and there does not seem to be a way to change this, to upload a media file as a universal media player file format to my wiki. It has worked but you will realize that you will have to either open the file or save it. Then only those participants that have itunes installed will be able to listen to the file as I cannot change the file format. Whatever you download and pay for with itunes cannot be played with other media players. Perhaps some can be downloaded as they have allowed (Apple/record industry) to allow this but the song I have purchased with itunes cannot be played with MediaPlayer. Burning, syncing ipod, using software for ipod to backup files and delete and edit them also doesn`t work (tried that too..) This is not itunes and Apple`s only problem. ..... Come to that in a later post..... Anyway, this well-wishing baw spaceship needs to refuel and sends it`s greetings to those that celebrate Valentines and care to have a look at a rather amateurish but acceptable novice attempt!!:) at my Valentines wiki. [:-/] Goodnight to all and look forward to the next galactic baw experiment!!! |
Moira Hunter #2232 (Response to #2230) 02/12/2007 | Hi my dear Sarah, Thanks for giving birth to your first 'baby wiki' and I'm sure the Week 5 team will have help to give you on the wiki. As I'm not in Wales on the 14th (Sarah's home country) but in Ireland, I'll let you know what they get up to on THE day over there ;-) |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2237 02/12/2007 | Hi Sarah Have you tried uploading a mp3 file instead? I have tried that, and it opens a player in my browser, it doesn't ask me to save it. |
Hala Fawzi #2241 (Response to #2237) 02/12/2007 | Dear Sarah, I love the theme of your wiki.It looks great!! Are you sure you are novice? If you started on week 1, then you would have finished by week 2 !! If you are still having difficulties with your file, let me suggest something for you. Why don't you try sending the file to Teresa, one of our Coordinators, on YM and she can work on it and see if she can help out?? Let us know if you agree so we can arrange a meeting at YM together! Relax and go for week5! Happy Valentine day to you! |
Cristina Costa #2256 (Response to #2241) 02/13/2007 | Nice wiki Sarah! I would say that love is in the wiki! This is really great. Congrats and happy valentines! I just wasn't able to listen to the music because it asks me for a password, but apart from that I love the page you put together. It is so cute and welldone! |
Nelba #2403 02/14/2007 | Dear Cristina: you wiki is not only good but very sweet. Pity I am a very bad cook:( Congratulations! Nelba |
Sarah (Germany) #2295 02/13/2007 | Dear everyone, I wanted to share a link with you. Perhaps you already know about it, have the RSS feeds doing the work for you:), have an itunes account set up with automatic downloads of FREE podcasting subscriptions or it is new. Either way, I quite like listening to this podacst as it is regularly updated, concerns teachers and explores technology. Here is the link to the website where you can then subscribe, download or save the podacst file; http://www.podcastforteachers.org/ I have just saved the latest edition as an MP3 file and will now try to add it to the "files" folder for everyone to be able to listen to it. This time it is not a troublesome file firmat.:) Hope you are all having/ had a good day and look forward to the rest of the course. |
Sarah (Germany) #2299 02/13/2007 | Hi again to everyone, The MP3 file has now been uploaded to the public Wiki for you all to save and download. You should be able to play it now with Media Player.Happy listening. |
Hala Fawzi #2303 (Response to #2299) 02/13/2007 | Dear Sarah, I was at the wiki now http://baw07participants.pbwiki.com/your_applications Is this where you put your file, or you just uploaded it to the files ? Is this the link to your file:http://baw07participants.pbwiki.com/f/PFT_74_2_12_07.mp3 I am sorry, but all the list is very eager to listen to it! Waiting for help to locate your file, |

Fernanda Rodrigues #2341 (Response to #2335) 02/13/2007 | Hi Sarah There's some problem with the file: my players say they can't play it. How did you create that file? |
Sharon Betts #2408 02/14/2007 | I have added this to my list of podcasts toreview. I can see that I will need more than 24 hours in the days to come. Thank you for posting this resource. |
Julia Yatsenko #2478 02/15/2007 | Hello, dear bawers We celebrated St. Valentine's Day and my students posted love poems to their podcasting blog. As we decided to chose the best poem from the point of view of pronunciation and intonation we need your votes. So, if you have time, please, visit their podcast and vote for the best. Thanks in advance! |
Hala Fawzi #2480 (Response to #2479) 02/16/2007 | Hi Julia, I liked your podcasting blog very much.Your students accent is very good.I just voted ! Angelina's hug poem can do is dedicated to to all webheads around the world! (((((((((((((( HUGS))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Give her a hug fom Sudan |
Cristina Costa #2482 (Response to #2480) 02/16/2007 | Dear Julia, I loved the poems. I tried to vote but wasn't able. I don't know exactly why. I left comments though. |
Elisabeth Fernandes #2483 (Response to #2482) 02/16/2007 | Julia, I have just visited your podcasting blog and left comments for your students.Very nice job. Congratulations to all of you. |
Julia Yatsenko #2488 (Response to #2483) 02/16/2007 | Thank you very much to all those who has left their comments in my students' podcast!!!! As for the poll (which isn't working), does anybody know what the reason might be? I've tryed to use Sparklit, but it doesn't work either :-( |
Cristina Costa #2490 (Response to #2488) 02/16/2007 | I think there is something wrong with the code. some of the line codes appear underneath the poll box and they should, You might want to introduce the code again! Just my 2 cents! |
Julia Yatsenko #2491 (Response to #2490) 02/16/2007 | Thank you very much, Elisabeth and Cristina, for taking time to leave comments to all of my students!!! Thank you Cris for trying to help!Hala, you've said "I just voted !" Did you really manage to do that as the current results are 0% and I and Cris didn't succeed in doing that? Any other suggestions how to make the poll work? Why are they both (pollhost.com and sparklit) not working in my podcast? Thanks, |
Hala Fawzi #2492 (Response to #2491) 02/16/2007 | Julia, I pressed the vote@ button and I thought it went fine. After I saw Cris' words, I went back and added some comments. There is an html code left under the voting box, maybe this what causes the problem. |
Julia Yatsenko #2493 02/16/2007 | I followed Hala's advice. Will you try to vote once more for me to see if itworks this time? Thanks, |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2494 02/16/2007 | Hi, Julia! I just tried to vote (it's 11:45 GMT) and I don't think the poll is working, because there was only one vote and, though I tried 2-3 times, my vote never showed. When I click on "Submit vote", it doesn't change page and itdoesn't give me any feedback. When I clicked on "Check results", I noticed that my vote wasn't entered. I only did a poll once (Apr06) in my T-S blog and it worked fine. http://fwe2.motime.com/post/564104/ Please go there and vote. Can you believe that I never closed voting??!!! It comes in handy now. Please vote and see what happens. You should be immediately taken to the results page. I just tried and my vote was inserted at once. It changed from 27 to 28 votes. This is the kind of feedback I was referring to above and that I don't get in your poll. HTH. |
Cristina Costa #2495 (Response to #2494) 02/16/2007 | I voted on the second one, Teresa! :) I think the problem with Julia's poll is that the code not closed. You have insert it correctly on the podcast in order it to show only the poll and no code. |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2499 (Response to #2495) 02/16/2007 | Cristina, Click "Current results" and you'll see that there is no vote in #2. Only Irene has 1 vote. This is what I see. Is that what you see? Hugs, Teresa |
Cristina Costa #2501 (Response to #2499) 02/16/2007 | Yes. It is not working properly. If I were Julia I would probably setting up a new poll and see what happens! |
Monica #2514 02/16/2007 | Hi Julia, what a great idea! I tried to access the page, but for some reason it did not open. It might have been a temporary problem, so I'll get back to it later in the day. |
Sarah Braxton #2537 02/16/2007 | Julia - I will have to listen to your students later, but for now wanted tos ay that I am so impressed with the way that you have integrated so many tools in one place. I especially like your use of the survey on the site. I would think that this provides great motivation for your students. Great work! |
Angeles Berman #2540 (Response to #2537) 02/16/2007 | Hi Julia, What a wonderful idea for St, Valentine's day!!! I'll show this site to my teenager students !!! I think they'll likE it. Can I? Your students read so well. I have posted some comments there , too. I voted and no problems but when I took a look to the poll, it just showed two votes and I can see here that bawers are voting :(Hope everybody can take a look and participate :) Well done, Julia!!! |
Julia Yatsenko #2566 02/17/2007 | Hello all I just want to thank Elisabeth,Cristina, Hala, Angeles, Teresa and Isabel once more for their comments in my students' podcast The link for voting is working ;-) I'm sure the students will be impressed on Monday, but there are still 2 votes. You may show this podcast to your students as well (answering Angeles' question). |
Hala Fawzi #2568 (Response to #2566) 02/17/2007 | Hi again Juia, I went to assure I have voted, but I didn't find the vote box! |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2570 (Response to #2568) 02/17/2007 | Hala, It's a link right under the cute Valentine's elephant.The more votes, the merrier! Let's vote! I have. |
Sharon Betts #2446 02/15/2007 | I know this isn't the week of the map -but, I just added a Frapper map to both my webheadtools site and to my Integration blog. I would appreciate anyone placing their pin on either or both. |
Hala Fawzi #2450 (Response to #2446) 02/15/2007 | Done! Congratulations on your adding the maps! |
Elisabeth Fernandes #2457 (Response to #2450) 02/15/2007 | Sharon, I've added myself to your Frapper map. |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2470 02/15/2007 | I've added myself too. |
Sharon Betts #2472 (Response to #2470) 02/15/2007 | Thank you for adding yourselves to my Frapper map.The students and teachers in my district are getting quite a charge out of all the world entries. |
Maru #2473 02/15/2007 | Hi Sharon! I just added myself to your map, I saw that automatically adds me to the map onyour second site... Clever! Excellent work!! Thanks for checking my exercise and for sending the link for Hot Potatoes tutorials, it will be very helpful for this week :-) |
Moira Hunter #2623 02/18/2007 | Me too :-)))) |
Sharon Betts #2545 (Response to #2544) 02/16/2007 | http://webheadtools.motime.com/ I just visited my blog and was overcome by all the postings on the map and to my tools. You are a fantastic group and I am going to miss my many hours on the computer waiting for those 100s of emails and ideas. I feel honored to have found you. Wouldn't it be great if we could meet in person (blended baw) someday? Sharon PS - If you haven't added your name, you are still invited. |
Hala Fawzi #2546 (Response to #2545) 02/16/2007 | Yes, Sharon! It is more than great when you meet a webhead for the first time. Do you believe that you start talking ( a non stop one) as if you have known each other for years? I ahd only one with a dear Egyptian webehad, Randa Effat,in Cairo last year and it was unforgetable We hanve many f2f webheads meetings in different parts of the world documented on Tere's index here: Some of them with photos and others with photo story. Did you hear about it/I wonder why we haven't shown new bawers some of our photo stories!! I am off to work now, but I hope when I come back I will find some of our historian photostories are posted here! Talk to you Susan. You were more than amazing on this baw. Welcome to Bawsphere |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2556 02/17/2007 | Hi, Sharon! Hala has said what there is to say about Webheads meeting f2f. You can take a look at real examples http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/webheads/wia-index2.htm#Meet (enjoy!) and then experience it for real, the sooner the better! Many of us will be in Seattle for TESOL 2007. As to "I am going to miss my many hours on the computer waiting for those 100s of emails and ideas", there's no need for that. We hope you'll stay with us in our warm mini UN - why can't the real one learn form us?! - and continue sharing and exchanging experiences. The pace slows down, thank God!, but "business and pleasure" continue as usual. :-) |
Moira Hunter #2631 02/18/2007 | Are you going to TESOL Seattle this year? Many of us will be there in March so it would be great to meet you if you're going to be around there and then? |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2558 02/17/2007 | Hi, everyone! It's true that we haven't talked about photo stories and PhotoStory, Hala. It's a great software to create photo presentations or a tutorial (why not?). The software is very easy to use and audio (narration and music) can be embedded. We have several examples of Webhead meetings in photo stories. Here's one of a Lisbon Webheads dinner where you will meet three of this week's mods and co-mods. In the last picture (from left to right): Cristina, Ramona, Fernanda, Joao (Teresa's husband), Teresa and Luisa. http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/webheads/meetings/lisbonwia05.wmv (no sound in this one) Enjoy! Hugs, Teresa |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2560 02/17/2007 | Hi, Ronaldo! There's one example of Movie Maker from Webhead Michael Coghlan, who presented for us in Week 2. It's called "My story". http://users.chariot.net.au/~michaelc/els/mystory_sample.wmv I don't recall differences between MovieMaker and PhotoStory. I'm sure Michael gave us feedback back then (2204), so if he's around and reads this, maybe he will help us. All I can say is that the end products are very similar. You can be sure that when a Webhead travels, we always arrange for f2f meetings well in advance! :-) |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2562 02/17/2007 | Really nice, Teresa! If one of you webheads ever come to Brazil, don't forget to contact me before!!! Now a question, have you guys ever used Windows Movie Maker (the one that comes in the windows package) for that purpose? How would you compare these two softwares (Windows Movie Maker and Microsoft Photo Story)? |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2563 02/17/2007 | Hi Teresa, Loved the pictures of real meetings! Unfortunately, I won't make it toSeattle, but can't hardly wait to meet some webheads offline =) |
Sharon Betts #2572 02/17/2007 | We use both Photo Story and Movie maker on our windows machines for students to do digital storytelling. Photo Story is really made for digital images and Movie Maker for movies (camcorders). Of course you can put still images into Movie Maker and get a result very much like Photo Story. Photo Story is much easier to use overall - quick with clean results. Students from 10 -100 enjoy working with it.There are many online tutorials for Photo Story - some are linked Agenda page of my storytelling presentation: http://www.eport52.org/editable/s/be/sbetts/wiki/3/?HomePage |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2573 (Response to #2572) 02/17/2007 | Hi, Sharon! The URL asks for a username and password. :-( I liked "students from 10-100"!!! |
Sharon Betts #2576 (Response to #2573) 02/17/2007 | Try this one - http://www.eport52.org/published/s/be/sbetts/wiki/3/?HomePage I sent the editable one by mistake. |
Dennis Newson #2580 (Response to #2576) 02/17/2007 | Ronaldo, I've used Movie Maker and Photo Story. Movie Maker is the complete thing - movement and sound, music, clips to edit so that you can create special effects. Photo Story means you are deliberately restricting yourself to still pictures and spoken comment. It can be very effective. One of my photo stories - Introducing Nils - which I made for my granddaughter, is at: http://www.slidestory.com/?page=detail&cid=161 I must confess, I rather like it - some everyday adventures of a blue hippopotamus with my voice! The Movie Maker film I made with contributions from Carla and her students and it is to be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyikltypWRo I enjoyed making this so very much! |
Michael Coghlan #2586 (Response to #2580) 02/17/2007 | This is an interesting way of using this medium Dennis, but I am curious. Were the repeated bits deliberate? To add an artistic touch to the editing perhaps? Or were they simply mistakes? :-) |
Dennis Newson #2591 02/17/2007 | Michael, Yes, the repeated parts were deliberate! I was trying to be creativelyamusing........... |
Michael Coghlan #2587 02/17/2007 | MovieMaker and Photostory are very similar. Photostory is slightly easier and quicker to use in my opinion, but is designed to create a presentation from photos. MovieMaker allows you to include movies and still photos in your production. There are other differences, but it's a while since I've played with either tool. A good DST (Digital Storytelling site): |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2620 02/18/2007 | Hi, Sharon! There are some very nice stories in the "Elementary studentexamples".I've started a new category in my EFL/ESL page on Digital Storytelling. I already had two links and added a couple of of yours. Hope you don't mind. http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/school/efl-eslpage.htm Michael, thanks for the clarification about PS and MM. Nothing like exploring both tools to get a feel of them and the differences between them.I've added the link you gave for the DS Network to the page above. |
Berta #2588 02/17/2007 | Jane and I met again last January but took very few pictures. We couldn´t stop talking and walking around the city to see as much as we possibly could. Here is a link for Tere´s index: http://www.bubbleshare.com/album/125451 All the best, Berta |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2617 02/18/2007 | Done, Berta! I've added the link. It's the first for 2007!!! Lovely photos! I love snow. :-) |
Hala Fawzi #2593 (Response to #2591) 02/17/2007 | Hi Michael, Thanks for the information! I also wanted to thank you for your wonderful comment on Muhanned's blog. He is so enthusiastic about your telling him of the Sudanese refugees. He decided to devote all his blog about life in Sudan. Thanks for inspiring him and the whole class. They listened to your "Happy Online" and clapped happily offline!!! Thanks again, |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2596 (Response to #2593) 02/18/2007 | Hi Dennis, thanks a lot for the feedback. I've already tagged slidestory.com, I can see many classroom uses for that. And it was great to watch your video at youtube, for I didn't know that when you said Carla you meant Carla Arena -I recognized it because the questions were filmed at the school where I work. By the way, I liked you response to the guy who said he loved you -have you two been communicating privately through e-mail? |
Dennis Newson #2599 (Response to #2596) 02/18/2007 | No, Ronaldo, I have never heard from the student in question again. Life can be full of disappointments, and very hard. :-))) |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2607 (Response to #2599) 02/18/2007 | lol |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2595 02/18/2007 | Teresa, Michael, Sharon and Dennis, thanks a lot for all the information (about photo story x windows moviemaker). Webheads rock! |

Monica #2405 (Response to #2397) 02/14/2007 | Hi Sarah, BAWers never cease to amaze me! Just when I thought I had tried enough cool tools, there comes another! I had completely forgotten about Pageflakes, thanks for sending the invitation to see your page! It looks fantastic and I'm probably taking some time during Carnival to set up my own space there! |
Sharon Betts #2411 02/14/2007 | Very very nice Sarah - I like Pageflakes. |
Sarah (USA) #2248 02/12/2007 | Sharon, I am trying to figure out how to take the plunge into RSS. I have two questions about your Protopage, where individual's blogs are listed. First, did the feed for each person's blog come from their blog, where you cut and pasted it? (and if not, how did you get the feed) Second, what do the lines within each person's blog represent? For example, I see under "Marus' first blog": -Clock -Week 4 findings -Communicator Springdoo, etc. Do these change as Maru adds content to her blog? Maybe just knowing the steps to create your Protopage entries would help me... Thanks. |
Susan Ryan #2332 02/13/2007 | If someone has time could they give a brief explanation of these blogfeed tools? Or perhaps there is a link someone could refer me to? I don't really get it. Yet... (:Thanks in advance! |
Sharon Betts #2346 (Response to #2332) 02/13/2007 | http://www.sharonbetts.org/site/pmwiki.php?n=Main.Learn-RSS I just sent this to the list - read it and see if it clears up at all. If not, let me know and I will do a step by step. |
Sharon Betts #2345 02/13/2007 | Hi Sarah, RSS can be a teachers salvation for time when blogging with students. It is also a real time saver for me as I like to keep tabs on hundreds of blogs and just wouldn't remember if not for my readers. I did a short page on RSS - read it and see if it helps. If not, let me know and I will elaborate. |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2388 02/14/2007 | Hi, Susan! This is a Will Richardson presentation for an EVO workshop during which, with his tips, I subscribed to a blog feed for the first time. I believe that you need to be registered in Learning Times to have access to it. TinyURL: http://tinyurl.com/ynp92c You will find several interesting and useful links under Blogs in my OLE page. http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/webheads/online-learning-environments.htm Hope this is useful! Thanks for leaving a comment in Rodrigo's blog. This morning in class he asked me if I knew you and I said: "Yes! Susan is my workshop!" He smiled. |
Sarah Braxton #2409 (Response to #2388) 02/14/2007 | Sharon, Thanks for the link to your explanation of RSS (You have a LOT of additional useful information linked to this page). To all, 10:00 am - I have set up several feeds now on a Pageflakes page. The first is a feed from BBC that provides me with articles about India. The second is a podcast feed from Discovery (see the iPod!) The third is a feed from Flickr. The fourth is a feed to my gmail account. Have a look - I am curious about how it looks from your end! I chose Pageflakes because it lays out information across the screen in an orderly way, and to me looks a little more formal than Protopage. Have a look - I am curious to know what you see (for example, can you read my email?) 2:00 pm - 4 hours later and I am a little frustrated! I created a Springcast (from Springdoo) for you all to see from the new Pageflakes, but I could not get Pageflakes to accept the feed to my Springdoo communicator. Next I tried to get my own blog http://jvhslibrarian.blogspot.com... to feed into my Pageflakes page http://www.pageflakes.com/sarahbraxton.ashx?page=8690861... but could not get the RSS code from the blog.and in the meantime I managed to change my template and lost a lot of content! Oh well, Sarah (USA) Ps - I have a glorious day off of school due to snow! |
Sharon Betts #2412 02/14/2007 | I believe that all blogger feeds are justthe URL with atom.xml added at the end. Sarah try: http://jvhslibrarian.blogspot.com/atom.xml |
Susan Ryan #2429 02/14/2007 | I appreciate the information about the feed tools, thanks for sending these links. After a long afternoon of preparing my taxes I am not up to adding feeds right now so....manana! |
Sarah Braxton #2465 02/15/2007 | Thanks, Sharon - indeed the link you provide with atom.xml attached to the URL of my blog provided the code for the post feeds! Sarah (USA) |
Susan Ryan #2471 02/15/2007 | Thanks to Sharon, Teresa and others who responded to my query about feed tools. As it turns out I have been using these on my personalized Google homepage already ( :Sharon's explanation on her wiki cleared some of the fog from my brain. Now I will add some feeds to a blog. |
Gladys Baya #2290 02/13/2007 | Encouraged by Maru's invitation, I tried Evoca.. First I pressed"Mute" on my keyboard (I had been listening to the radio) and then couldn't understand why I wouldn't hear myself... :-P Then something went wrong with my mic and I couldn't record again... I got a message asking me to check my settings... Well, first year at BAW I tried HandyBits, last year Springdoo and Podomatic, with the WIA Yackpack (?) and Gabmail with a WIA who is also a friend, I think... this BAW has brought about exploration of MyChingo, and this half-attempt at using Evoca, which I'll need to repeat.... This week, I should be trying Odeo for B4B... What do you think? 5 BAWs more and I will have tried nearly all of them? ;-) |
Sharon Betts #2340 02/13/2007 | 5 BAWs more and I will have tried nearly all of them? ;-) This says it all, Gladys. I guess I will need to sign up again, and again, and again. |
Maru #2189 02/11/2007 | Hi Angeles! I just saw you and heard your voice at Gabjam! Congratulations! You look very pretty!! Thanks for letting me see the uses of this environment, I had not visited Gabjam before. I do not have a camera so there is no video in my reply. Good luck and continue using the tools. |
Maru #2192 (Response to #2189) 02/11/2007 | Hi Moira! I just listened to your video message at Gabjcam. I do not have a camera so the video will be black. The quality of the video is better than in Springdoo, it does not fragmentsitself. Springdoo adds my picture to the video when I do not have camera which is nice The sound of my message is low and I could not improve it, remember I need a sound card. I hope that when I answered I had treaded the voice message. The following is the link that showed up: |
Dafne #2193 (Response to #2192) 02/11/2007 | This is how I was introduced to Gabjam by Moira in December: http://freegabmail.com/AV/Viewer.html?SID=mD07Y0aA4782R4bN Moira, hope you don't mind I am sharing this ;-) |
Moira Hunter #2202 (Response to #2193) 02/12/2007 | Dear Daf, What a brilliant idea to send this :-))))) I had completely forgotten about it but it is in fact quite a good 'informal tutorial' to be referred to when you look at the thread again!! |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2245 02/12/2007 | Hi Moira! I recorded a reply to your gabmail message. It's the third one - you won't see me because I don't have a webcam on this pc I'm using right now. check it out: |
Moira Hunter #2276 02/13/2007 | Hi Ronaldo and Maru, I've left a message :-) |
Dennis Newson #2292 (Response to #2276) 02/13/2007 | Moira and Renaldo, Here is some sort of rambling reply. Dennis Denos To view your GabMail(tm) video email message simply click the link below or copy and paste it into your browser. |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2243 02/12/2007 | Hello Baw07ers! I have created a new discussion about myths and stereotypes at chinswing.com, and would be glad if some of you could go there and contribute with your opinion. Here is the link: http://chinswing.com/pages/discussion.aspx?id=98c2b379-bd39-422a-9d65-408aa4f3c243 |
Moira Hunter #2277 02/13/2007 | Hi Ronaldo, Great idea and you have two post already :-) |
Monica #2305 02/13/2007 | Hi everyone! I started a thread in Chinswing, inviting people to post their views on film adaptations (in fact, films being adapted from novels). I'm going to ask my students to listen to your posts and comment - their task is to write a review of a film which has been adapted from a book and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of that. I would love to hear your opinion! Thanks! http://www.chinswing.com/pages/discussion.aspx?id=f47af73d-a696-40d8-9aa0-c354af3d562b |
Moira Hunter #2314 (Response to #2305) 02/13/2007 | A great topic Monica! So much so that you have to be careful of the length of the reply as this islimited to 2 minutes :-(The link which will take contributors directly to your topic is this : http://www.chinswing.com/pages/discussion.aspx?id=f47af73d-a696-40d8-9aa0-c354af3d562b |
Monica #2318 (Response to #2314) 02/13/2007 | Hi Moira, thank you for your comments on my Chinswing thread, it was great! I'm sure my students will find them very useful. And thanks for correcting the url, for some reason part of it was not linked. If anyone else has any problems accessing it, you can also try the link I put on the blog - http://manyreviews.blogspot.com There you will also find the link to the quiz in SurveyMonkey. I'm going to start working on the writing activities now. |
Elisabeth Fernandes #2398 02/14/2007 | Monica, I've just visited your blog and was very impressed. I took the quiz about theOscars and I surprised myself by getting about half the answers right. And your topic on Chinswing is very interesting too. My mic is not working, but I hope to get another soon and I'll try to add to your thread. |
Maru #2344 02/13/2007 | Hi Ronaldo! I heard the discussion thread, very interesting. Congratulations! I left my comments and registered at Chinswings recording my introduction message. My username is mmvcentro.Your ideas are making me move! Thanks! I would like to learn how Chinswing works and how to send the link to my introduction for you to hear it. It caught my attention that English and Scotish are the ones, up to now, participating in this discussion. I would like to invite the group to participate as well. Love: Maru P.S. You have a deep, rich and relaxing voice. |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2383 02/14/2007 | I'd like to thank Meeshkol (is she takingBaw?), Moira, Dennis Deno, Johanna and Maru for contributing to my Chinswing thread on stereotypes. I started this thread just to test Chinswing, but since I got so many interesting and insightful replies, I'll definitely use it with my students! So, if other people could (and would like to) participate too, here goes the link again: http://www.chinswing.com/pages/discussion.aspx?id=98c2b379-bd39-422a-9d65-408aa4f3c243 Somebody asked me how to send the link to the personal introduction (sorry, I lost this message and didn't memorize who it was...) - all you should do is click on your photo and it will take you to your profile page, then copy the url and send the link telling people to click on the "play" button. |
Susana Arajo #2349 02/13/2007 | Hello dear friends! I finally signed up for Chinswing and managed to post a message there. It's about tongue twisters. I've noticed my students love "mouthing" them in Portuguese, so how about start teaching a few in English? I tried once or twice and they laughed and enjoyed a lot ;-) kept saying and repeting the words ;-) Lovely!I'd like to ask you to visit my Chinswing at http://www.chinswing.com/pages/discussion.aspx?id=ccdc4964-5e80-4c7b-a60f-87f78ab6c179 and leave me some tongue twisters you know in English. Not tooo difficult, as they are elementary level. Simple sentences and repetitive sounds would be great to develop their listening and speaking skills! I apologize for the sound. I guess I was too near the mic...or maybe I'll have to buy a more hi-tech one, like Moira's...eh,eh! I'll leave a tongue twister here to inpire your contributions: How much web would a web browser browse, if a web browser could browse web?Thank you very much in advance! |
Dafne #2361 (Response to #2349) 02/14/2007 | Dear Susana, What a great idea! I love tong twisters. The computer I am using now does not have a mic, but these are 2 tongue twisters I have used with my students: Sally sells sea shells by the sea shore. Fuzzy wuzzy was a bear, Fuzzy wuzzy had no hair, Fuzzy wuzzy wasn`t very fuzzy, was it? |
Dennis Newson #2368 (Response to #2361) 02/14/2007 | Dafne, I got my recording wrong at the end! Does anyone know how you can erase a recording when it is already there on Chinswing? Never mind. We all believe in communication not accuracy, don't we? |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2370 (Response to #2368) 02/14/2007 | Hi Dennis I'm afaid I can't find any link to delete files. Can't you replace the file? |
Maru #2352 02/13/2007 | Hello Everybody! My God! This is addictive! As soon as I am done reading messages and visiting links posted... I get new emails and I star over. I am learning so much and having so much fun that it is hard to leave the computer. It is great to hear the sound of your voices! I am not used to record using my voice, I feel shy but I know that if I do not practice I will remain in the same place. This voice thread is excellent! I am a book lover though I enjoy movies as well. I didn't do well on the Movie's quiz . I will have to focus on the activities of week 5. I am so tangled up! Today I was at Alado waiting for the conference and got into panic because I was alone in the room! Fortunatelly Hala was using YM and told me... "THURSDAY, the conference is not today, today is Tuesday! We had a good laugh and I enjoyed Hala's laughter! Please... stop posting activities... I cannot resist them! |
Cristina Costa #2379 02/14/2007 | Dear Maru, I am glad that you enjoying the workshop and that you are feeling the benefits of belonging to such an active group. I am having problems with my Yahoo! Account today. I can access it and don't now really know why. I am answering through the Yahoo! group and I couldn't help smiling at your comment, especially because I know exactly that feeling. I also feel addicted to all this contagious activity that goes on in BaW07. But it is a healthy addiction and so I hope to keep being addiction for the years to come. Keep up the good work. |
Maru #2401 02/14/2007 | Dear Cristina: Your kind words cheered me up. Of course I will be on the conference tomorrow, I do not want to miss it. I have not used tools to create exercises online before, I am learning a lot and having fun at the same time. I am not familiar with Yahoo, I am afraid I cannot help you out to solve the problem . It is great that you found out how to keep posting, if something similar happens to me I will know now what to do to remain in touch. Yahoo groups, good idea. I really have to focus on this week activities, I feel a bit behind, too many new places to visit! I am acting like an old rag... I keep getting tangled in every corner! Everything is new, interesting and challenging. With a group like this there is no other way to go but... up! I hope to see you too on Thursday. |
Cristina Costa #2414 02/14/2007 | Dear Maru, Take your time. You can only do so much. And let me tell you you are doing great. Looking forward to meeting you online. We are going to have a great time! |
Dennis Newson #2375 02/14/2007 | Fernanda, I will try...If all else fails, I will re-do it, and mention that the second recording is a re-take. |
Susana Arajo #2377 (Response to #2375) 02/14/2007 | Hello Dafne and Dennis Newson! Wow! This is what I call a collaborative team ;-) Thank you Dafne for your tongue twisters. I loved them! And I liked the idea of "your voice" being recorded by Dennis, eh, eh! Thank you a lot Dennis! Never mind about the end of your recording... That was what I really wanted: to hear you saying tongue twisters. It's really fun! And to those of you who haven't recorded any, pleeeease do. I'd love to hear (and laugh to ;-)) your contributions. If you know a tongue twister, do letme know and *hear* you :-)Thanks again and Happy Valentine's day |
Jennifer Verschoor #2420 02/14/2007 | Dear All, I forgot to tell you that I created a Chinswing on Podcasts. If you wish to participate please enter the following link: http://www.chinswing.com/pages/discussion.aspx?id=c7328a9f-3222-483c-9477-4cfb8296c356 Thanks for your participation |
Moira Hunter #2611 02/18/2007 | Hi Jennifer, This is an extremely interesting thread and if you others have not been thereyet, you should!!!! |
Susana Araujo #2516 02/16/2007 | Hi! I'd like to thank Dafne, Dennis Newson (again ;-)) and Julia from Russia for having shared their Tongue Twisters with me. Julia, your tongue twister is hilarious! I'm even afraid of twisting my tongue trying to say it quickly ;-) My students will love it! You did a great job! Thanks a lot! And as my students would say...I want more! I want more! Pleeease. I'd like to start my own collection of audio tongue twisters and link it to my blog http://funenglish4kids.motime.com/. If you'd like to contribute with a tongue twister, please do. Here's the link: http://www.chinswing.com/pages/discussion.aspx?id=ccdc4964-5e80-4c7b-a60f-87f78ab6c179 Thanks again! |
Julia Yatsenko #2532 (Response to #2516) 02/16/2007 | Susana, thank you for the compliment. That was my pleasure. I'll ask my students to record some tongue twisters for your students. |
Moira Hunter #2597 02/18/2007 | Hi Susana, I didn't even try to repeat yours - too difficult ;-))My headset is not hi-tech, about 20-25 Euros in the shops :-)A great thread for learners! |
Monica #2628 02/18/2007 | Hi Susana! Great idea to ask people to record tongue twisters - I had a hard time recording my suggestion! :) |
Johanna Stirling #2646 02/18/2007 | Hi everyone I know we've moved on from Chinswing and the like but I'm just catching up! I've just started a new thread there which I'd love you or your students to contribute to. It's at http://tinyurl.com/23hcbr (that's my first ever tinyurl - hope it works!). The idea is to find out what people from all over the world are doing at one particular time. And that time is Monday 19th February 2007 at 1300 GMT. So of course you need to check what time that is where you are and then after that time go to Chinswing and record what you were doing at exactly that time. If you were sleeping there may not be much to say (unless you were having a good dream!) but if for example you were eating, tell us what you were tucking into. It would be lovely to hear from some of your students too. Great past continuous practice! |
Moira Hunter #2651 (Response to #2646) 02/18/2007 | Dear Johanna, What a great idea! Can you BUZZ us at 13.00 GMT so we don't forget? Easy for you as you're in GMT;-) |
Hala Fawzi #2184 (Response to #2177) 02/11/2007 | Great work Mabel! Clear, organized, elegant and very informative! Congratulations! You did a wonderful job! |
Cora Chen #2191 02/11/2007 | Dear Mabel, You have done a wonderful job making these fantastic session pages! I like the layouts and the clear screen shots. :-))) Many thanks. |
Maru #2186 02/11/2007 | ... Dimdim. For a few minutes I talked to Moira and Sundar. The fact that you have to wait for the link to get there makes more difficult to arrange meetings. It was interesting to hear Moira learning how to be a moderator in that environment.... |
Moira Hunter #2190 (Response to #2186) 02/11/2007 | Hi Maru, I will reply in more detail later, but I just wanted to clarify two points about DimDim. There are two ways to be invited to a DimDim room. One is by email invitation and the other is by sending the url. I sent the url as these were open sessions where people could drop in and out whenever convenient to them whilst I opened the room. As I didn't know who would come, this was a better way of opening the room. The second point is that I was not learning to be a moderator. I was troubleshooting the problems and reporting these back to the IT in DimDim, taking screenshots all the time, so that these bugs are removed. I called Sundar in to the room for him to actually see from the participant's view what was happening when you had all those problems. Hope that is clearer now :-) |
Maru #2219 02/12/2007 | Hi Moira! Thanks for your answer, it makes clear how Dimdim works. I am glad to see that you work with the creators of Dimdim to troubleshootproblems on the site, you are an example to follow!! I am sorry for the misunderstanding I listened to one of Geof's recordings and saw that you have been using e-learning for years. Unfortunatelly I had already sent my answers by then. I feel more honoured now, if that can be possible, for having you dedicating time to beginers like me. Thanks again!! |
Moira Hunter #2233 02/12/2007 | Hi Maru, If there's one thing I am sure of it is the folllowing :- we are all beginners in something and learners for life for everything :-))) |
Moira Hunter #2188 02/11/2007 | Hello Everybody, I have posted an entry to our blog for your comments on the open sessions in DimDim which I gave in order to show what features this web-based open source virtual classroom has. Please leave your thoughts on our baby DimDim in its Alpha version :-) |
Gladys Baya #2270 02/13/2007 | Sorry Hala! After so much bothering you with requests and suggestions, I was totally overwhelmed by my many other duties and was unable to make it to DimDim... Hope there'll be other chances at a quieter time from me (April???) via the WIA.Thanks for your generous offer! |
Hala Fawzi #2578 02/17/2007 | A belated explanation! I think you means Moira, who generously offered open sessions at DIDMID. There will be other chances for sure to experiment and play with all the tools, not only with DIMDIM! Time flies so fast. |
Jose Antonio da Silva #2356 02/13/2007 | Hi Moira, Daf and all , I am sorry I have not been posting to DimDim the forum and other applications. I am working too hard and I dont really have much time now. However I keep reading the digests and I really love what you all have been doing. The carnival holiday is coming and then I think I will be able to catch up. Big hug |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2367 (Response to #2356) 02/14/2007 | Hi Jose Antnio I guess everyone is working hard, so take your time and relax. You know the materials and info will be online and you can go back to them later. Enjoy your carnival holidays! Beijinhos from Portugal |
Hala Fawzi #2252 02/12/2007 | Dear all, I hope you are enjoying your residence with us in week5! Here is an example of an interesting survey by our great coordinator, Dafne, for her students at Architecture and Urban Planning Course Here is one by Anita, who participated in Learning with computers workshop 2005: BTW, you will not regret visiting Anita's blog here to see how a newbie use a blog: As for examples of online surveys in general; here is one, which generated by Discovery School, for our dear Gladys , her: http://school.discovery.com/quizzes31/gladysbaya/Netiquette.html This one was suggested in baw05 and it is very useful for administrations: http://www.geodata.soton.ac.uk/llas/learning_survey/ Now, after giving a whole day relaxation, you may proceed today in exploring all the tools. We want to see links to new creations shining on your blogs and wikis, guys and gals!! Any surveys yet? My two Sudanese pounds, Hala |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2255 (Response to #2252) 02/13/2007 | Dear all Let me share with you 2 surveys I created 2 years ago with one of my classes. One is about reading habits, the other about the use of cellphones; this second one was created for a collaboration among my students and Chrissan and Clair Taylor's students. http://users.prof2000.pt/mfr/class10f_0405/cellphones.asp"> Link
http://users.prof2000.pt/mfr/class10f_0405/cellphones.asp"> Link Results of the survey:
http://users.prof2000.pt/mfr/class10f_0405/cellphones_default.asp They were not created using SurveyMonkey or any other online tool, but as Hala says, the important is not the tool you use, but what you get in the end. |
Hala Fawzi #2253 02/12/2007 | Hi new webheads-to-be I think you are already true webheads ,especially after hearing Ronaldo saying something about addiction to baw! !Now you ARE one of us! The first quiz ever I "sat for" in my short cyberspace life was the famous quiz by Albion.com. Since I joined baw 2005, I used to do it every now and then until I got my 100%. http://www.albion.com/netiquette/netiquiz.html I thought it is important for you to have a look at it and maybe bookmark it for further "do/re-do", if you have not came across it before. This is what they write on the home page under this quiz:"Test your network etiquette knowledge with the Netiquette Quiz, our first Java applet. It's nifty and fun. You need a Java-compatible browser like Netscape Navigator 2.0 or higher to run this applet. Sorry, but this applet doesn't run very well on the Macintosh platform."Tell us what was your mark, bravely!! |
Moira Hunter #2324 02/13/2007 | Hello all, I love answering all these quizzes! I am offline in Ireland for a few days due to my work but am really looking forward to coming back to click away answering all the questions :-)) Please don't make them too difficult ;-) How about incorporating audio too? Please remember too to post your comments to the blog. Daf is the only one so far who has posted for DimDim and other posts are 'feeling lonely' too!! |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2242 02/12/2007 | Hi Baw07ers! My first contribution for week 5 is a survey about Brazil. Please, take some minutes to answer it! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=953913295514 Surveymonkey is super user-friendly! You can always refer to the different kinds of questions, it is easy to move/create/delete pages and questions, and you don't need to save your survey while or after designing it (it is automatically done by surveymonkey). It also gives you many options of how to distribute your survey (through links and pop-ups). I loved it and can alreay see many of its uses for the language classroom. |
Monica #2247 (Response to #2242) 02/12/2007 | Hi Ronaldo, Congrats, MonkeySurvey does seem like a very user-friendly tool to use with the students, and I think that they will have fun creating their own surveys! I had a look at your survey on Brazil and I was puzzled by one of the questions, which asked readers about the dates of some Brazilian festivities. The problem is that both Carnival and Mother's Day are celebrated on different days every year, so what would you consider a 'correct' answer in this case? Is it possible to eliminate the 'year'from the question? |
Hala Fawzi #2250 (Response to #2247) 02/12/2007 | Congratulations Ronaldo for your first survey! I liked the "no I have changed my mind" very much. Nice to use with students! I second Monica;s suggestion about eliminating the year, which it stopped meand I filled it with 1999!! Did you get it? Way to go! Hala (counting hugs) |
Cristina Costa #2259 (Response to #2250) 02/13/2007 | I just loved your quiz! Way to go Ronaldo! |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2260 (Response to #2259) 02/13/2007 | Hi Monica and Hala, I noticed the problem with the question about the dates when I was taking the survey myself. I couldn't find a way to eliminate the year, so what I did was change the question to: "when are the following festivals/special dates going to be celebrated in Brazil this year? Thanks for the feedback! |
Nelba #2267 02/13/2007 | Hi, Ronaldinho! your survey is very funny! good! You have inspired me and I will include one in my blog. By the way, thanks to all bawers who have left comments in my blog: The ones who have not, please visit it and leave a message wherever you want :) Talking about survey monkey, I completely agree with our Ronaldo that it is very friendly and easy to use. I have already used it with a on-line course I gave last December. You can see who voted and who have not, percentages, you can include the option of the participat to leave his/her opinion. Try it, it is really useful and free till 10 questions. If you want more questions, you must pay 4 the service . |
Ana Rivas #2268 (Response to #2267) 02/13/2007 | Hola Ronaldo Brilliant survey!!! Will you let us know the answers? I come from South America but I have my doubts concerning this year carnival!! |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2271 (Response to #2268) 02/13/2007 | Sure! I'll just let some more people answer and then I'll send the answers to the group. |
Moira Hunter #2275 02/13/2007 | Hi Ronaldo, I got my son to do it :-) He loved it! |
Chrissan #2284 (Response to #2275) 02/13/2007 | The key Ronaldo, the key, pleeeease;-) |
Maru #2294 (Response to #2284) 02/13/2007 | Well Done Rolando! I answered your survey. When I finished it lead me to MonkeySurvey so I registered, thanks! When are you going to tell us the right answers? I would like to learn more about Brazil! |
Ramona Dietrich #2302 02/13/2007 | Hi Ronaldo, Your survey was great fun. I can't wait until we get the results. |
Susana Araujo #2329 02/13/2007 | Hi Ronaldo! Tudo legal? Congratulations on your survey! It really caught my attention, my husband is Brazilian ;-), although he doesn't have any accent as he came to Portugal when he had about 3 years old. His mother is from Rio de Janeiro. I'm dying to visit Brazil ;-) Regarding your survey, I specially liked the "unreal" for the currency used in Brazil.Thank you for inspiring me to do my own survey. I'm going to give it a try. |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2385 02/14/2007 | Hi Baw07ers! I'd like to thank the 26 people who took my survey about Brazil. With the free account we cannot export the results, but we can save it as .asp and then send the file (that's what I've done here!) Here goes the answers: 1. Capital of Brazil - Brasilia (the beautiful city where I live) 2. Language spoken in Brazil - Portuguese (although with a little difference in accent compared to Portuguese from Portugal) 3. Dates: - Carnival always has a different date in Brazil (it has something to dowith a catholic calendar, but most Brazilians have no idea how it works... it is the same calendar that influences easter time), but this year, Carnival Tuesday (i.e. mardi gras, fat Tuesday) is next Tuesday (Feb. 20) but the celebration always starts on the Saturday before. - Mother's Day: as in the US, it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May (this year, May 13) - Valentine's Day: not today... it's on June 12 4. Reasons to visit Brazil - the only impossible one is "see the Eifel Tower" - for this option I think you should visit Moira =) 5. Popular vacation activities in Brazil - Going to the beach is extremely popular, bowling is somewhat popular, swimming in the amazon river is not very popular, and skiing is impossible. 6. The name of our currency is "Real"I hope one day you can all come and visit this beautiful country! |
Hala Fawzi #2251 02/12/2007 | SurveyMonkey is absolutely user friendly. I second Monica's in that it can be used by your students too. It is the webheads' favorite, so far! If you wonder why, it is because all directions and the 'How's" are very straightforward and takes no time ;f rom setting up an account, creating template, sending your survey, receiving and viewing the reports. It includes great online analysis tools built in . What is great, or I think one of the many great features of SurveyMonkey, is that it can generate the link to the survey for you to send in an email or insert on a webpage at your click. With the free version, which you will find quite satisfactory features, but if you buy the complete version ,( about 20$ per month ) , you get more capabilities, like having more than 10 questions and more than 100 responses! There are other many tools for creating online survey, like InstantSurvey ( not free) http://www.instantsurvey.com/, or Zoomerang http://info.zoomerang.com/. However, let me draw your attention to that ; what is much more important and comes first when creating a survey, is not how to use SurveyMonkey, or any other tool, but how to formulate the survey questions to get an understanding of the responses from those taking the survey. The content comes first then the use of the tool, remember? Let's shoot this too down! |
Monica #2266 02/13/2007 | Hi everybody, I tried the link to instant survey and it didn't work; then I checked the url and noticed that the comma was accidentally included in the link. So here's the correct url: Thanks for posting it, Hala! |
Johanna Stirling #2269 02/13/2007 | Hi Folks I've just made a Survey on SurveyMonkey. Nice tool!! I didn't have time to play around with all the options but it did what I wanted it to do I think. My survey is for real!! I'd love it if you could take the survey because your answers would enhance a presentation I'm giving this weekend. Here's the link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=999093303844 Many thanks |
Moira Hunter #2278 02/13/2007 | Done, Johanna, but my replies won't really help your survery. IWBs are 'big' in the UK but not here at all :-( |
Chrissan #2283 (Response to #2278) 02/13/2007 | Hi Johanna, I have answered your survey and I'd love to have the results. The would be very useful for me too, thanks for doing this!! |
Hala Fawzi #2322 02/13/2007 | Hi Johanna, I believe attending Isabel's presentation on Thursday will add to you to be more than ready for Saturday! Good Luck with your presentation! Please let us know how did it went.I just completed the survey. |
Johanna Stirling #2485 02/16/2007 | 23 of you took the time to complete my survey on interactive whiteboards that I posted earlier this week. That's fantastic, thank you. Really useful comments too. I'll post the results of the survey next week after I've done my presentation plus anything interesting that comes out of the workshop itself. What a cliffhanger, eh? Can you wait that long? ;-) But meanwhile you might like to watch my little Zimmertwins movie that I'm opening my talk with. http://www.zimmertwins.ca/node/402724 Thanks again, you wonderful lot! |
Monica #2287 02/13/2007 | Hi everyone, here's the link to my survey (well, a quiz actually, but I wanted to explore the tool...). The subject is the Academy Awards - my students are writing film reviews. Now I want to write a real survey, I'll send the link soon! :) Hope you enjoy it! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=791073304252 You can also access it from my blog: http://manyreviews.blogspot.com |
Moira Hunter #2289 (Response to #2287) 02/13/2007 | I need to watch more academy awards and recent films :-( |
Cristina Costa #2301 02/13/2007 | Hi Monica, What a really great idea for a quiz. I know little about the Oscars , so I glad I did the quiz. I learned a lot! Way to go! |
Dafne #2308 (Response to #2301) 02/13/2007 | I have failed a quiz for the first time in my longlife ;-) |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2310 (Response to #2308) 02/13/2007 | Dear Dafninha, It's about time!!!! ;-))))) Feeling more relaxed? |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2316 (Response to #2315) 02/13/2007 | Hi Daf Well, we are never too old to experiment new sensations! :) |
Hala Fawzi #2317 (Response to #2316) 02/13/2007 | Hear hear! Age? Did you get the Diploam? We need a photo! |
Sara Maria Costa
Ramirez #2315 (Response to #2310) 02/13/2007 | This was fun. I actually verified how little I know about academy award. Still auditing and learning a lot. Wow over the weekends I sometimes have over 200 messages to read!!!! What an active crowd. |
Hala Fawzi #2326 02/13/2007 | Although it took me some time, because of my shallow knowledge on the topic, but I did enjoy it! I had access to the survey from you blog! Great work! |
Maru #2350 02/13/2007 | Hi Monica! I had fun aswering your quizz! I need to pay more attention to movies What a great idea! Congratulations for your work and thanks for sharing. |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2378 02/14/2007 | Great survey, Monica. I feel I too need to watch more movies... |
Dafne #2306 02/13/2007 | Dear BaWers, I have been using SurveyMonkey for several years, and as many of you have pointed out, it is very user-friendly, and can be used not only for surveys. You can see some examples of different uses I give toSurveyMonkey, on this page: http://evoe-assessment.wikispaces.com/surveymonkey This is part of the presentation I delivered for thee-assessment EVO session 2 weeks ago. |
Nelba #2320 (Response to #2306) 02/13/2007 | Hi, Daf! Back in Venezuela? Thank you for the link. I'll have a look at it. By the way, can I embed Survey Monkey to my blog in motime? |
Nelba #2400 02/14/2007 | Hi, everybody. I am improving my blog http://n21810.motime.com and I would like to know if I can embed a survey in Survey Monkey to the blog. Can anyone help me? Thank you. Happy St. Valentine |
Cristina Costa #2413 02/14/2007 | Dear Nelba, you can certainly lik it to your blog. I don't know about embeding it, but I would think it would take some html codeif is possible. |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2423 (Response to #2413) 02/14/2007 | Hi Nelba If the survey had no images, you could do as I described for Hotpotatoes, but the radio buttons are images and they don't show up The best way is to link to the survey |
Sharon Betts #2410 (Response to #2400) 02/14/2007 | I have done a quick two question survey. It is posted on my blog |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2425 (Response to #2423) 02/14/2007 | Hi Sharon Congratulations for your blog and survey! |
Monica #2437 02/15/2007 | Hi Sharon, I answered your survey, great idea! I wanted to choose more than one option in question 2, but the system wouldn't let me... :( |
Moira Hunter #2605 02/18/2007 | Hi Sharon, Done! That blog is like a mushroom :-))))))))))) Great!!!! |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2461 02/15/2007 | Hi Monica You can't choose more than one option if you use radio buttons, The option Choice - Multiple answers would be the best type of question. |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2502 02/16/2007 | Hi, Johanna! I also created two movies for my students this school year to re-introduce CALL lessons and then to motivate them to create ZT movies. The first is about what CALL lessons are and the second is based on what we had just studied: like, love, hate... + -ing form. CALL lessons http://www.zimmertwins.ca/node/321954 My loves & hates http://www.zimmertwins.ca/node/345884 I think this is a fun way to introduce something: a lesson, a presentation...Good luck on the presentation and do let us know how it went and how the participants reacted. |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2510 02/16/2007 | Hi Johanna and Teresa! I loved your films! I didn't know zimmertwins, I used to do that atdfilm.com, but I'll try zimmertiwns now (there seems to be more features...) |
Hala Fawzi #2512 (Response to #2510) 02/16/2007 | Hi Johanna and Tere, I have not seen the second one before , Tere. I love it. I once thought zimmertwins could be used only with kids, but using it to introduce a presentaion? What a great idea to start a talk! Good luck Johanna. |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2518 (Response to #2512) 02/16/2007 | Hi, Ronaldo! Glad you liked ZT. You can find other software for films here. http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/school/efl-eslpage.htm#cartoons (look under "Software") Hala, glad you enjoyed the second film. :-) |
Cora Chen #2548 02/16/2007 | Dear All, If you have time, maybe you could look at my short survey? http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=562583331894 Thanks, |
Hala Fawzi #2554 (Response to #2548) 02/17/2007 | I love it! Where do you find all these unique ideas, guys and gals?I will create one about hugs late today! |
Carla Raguseo #2569 02/17/2007 | Dear Cora, I have just answered your survey. The topic is really interesting. I know that in Asian cultures there are some DOs and DON'Ts that have to be observed when giving and receiving gifts. EFL books always include some information, but I'd like to know more about it. Please, let us know the results as soon as you close the survey so that we can appreciate the cultural differences in our group. Thanks for sharing! |
Cora Chen #2571 (Response to #2569) 02/17/2007 | Dear Carla, Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my survey! I know that people in Asia usually use both hands to give and receive gifts to show respect to the gift giver and receiver. For them, it's not polite to open the gifts immediately; they usually wait until later to open the gifts. Is it true that people in the Muslim countries use their right hands to accept the gifts? I'm thinking about using the result of this survey to write a lesson plan, or make an interactive exercise, or maybe a blog entry. Thanks, Cora |
Hala Fawzi #2575 (Response to #2571) 02/17/2007 | Hi Cora, We, Muslims, do not use our left hand at all when eating, drinking or when giving or accepting anything, not only with gifts. On accepting gifts, we use our right hand as usual , but if the gift needs to be taken with both hands, there is no problem in that!! We do not mean to use the right or both hands. What's important is we do not use our left hand at all, or this is what is supposed to be! |
Cora Chen #2582 (Response to #2575) 02/17/2007 | Dear Hala, Thank you very much for the important information! I really appreciate your help.:-))) |
Maru #2430 02/14/2007 | Hello Everyone! How did you spent your Valentine's Day? I hope you had a nice day. I went to CLA Language Center, Interactive Exercise Makers and made a matching exercise called Application Forms, please check it out at the following link and let me know what do you think. http://elsiesgi.cla.umn.edu/match/application_page.htm I did not know what to do to see who answers and check them to grade students or a tutorial to follow. There several forms that I did not understand: Gloss Maker, Cloze Maker, EvalMaker and Multy Maker. I choose Match Maker because it was the one I understood. I also explored Hot Potatoes and saw:

Cristina Costa #2433 (Response to #2430) 02/15/2007 | Dear Maru, your exercise looks great. Thank you for sharing. About hotpotatoes. It is true that you have to download an application and then upload your exercise to a server for it to be available to the www community. It can be free though, as long as you are using it with an educational purpose. You will register and automatically receive a password from them. Let me also share with you all another software, quite similar to hotpotatoes. It is also free, but, as HotPotatoes, you also have to download it. It is called quizfaber http://www.lucagalli.net/eng/products.htm and I kinda like it. Here are some examples I used last year: http://virtual-waters.tripod.com/workingstudents.htm Another software I also find interesting is Teachers' pet, which in anapplication you download to your computer and automatically gets associated with you MS Word. It is good to create (online) worksheets. http://www.teachers-pet.org/ There is also an example on my site. |
Gladys Baya #2443 02/15/2007 | As far as I know, you're entitled to use Hot Pots for free for educational purposes provided that you work for a non-profit institution (that leaves private teachers and private language schools out) and you make the activities you design available to anyone on the Web (that means, not uploading them to school sites that require a password to log in), for instance.... That's why I've never gone far into my exploration of Hot Pots, I'm afraid... let me know if I'm wrong! |
Cristina Costa #2445 (Response to #2443) 02/15/2007 | Dear Gladys, this is the information you get from their site: Do I Need a Licence? Hot Potatoes is free for use by individuals working for state-funded educational institutions which are non-profit making, on the condition that the material you produce using the program is freely available to anyone via the WWW. However, you need to purchase a licence under any of the following conditions: You are working for a company or corporation, or an educational institution which is not state-funded. You are in business for yourself. You charge money for access to the material you make with Hot Potatoes. You do not make the material freely available through the WWW. So, my assumption is that if you work for a state school, State university or any other state organizations (like the Armed Forces, etc) and you are willing to make your exercises available on the internet with no restrictions you can use it freely. I have used it. I signed up and got a License key and had no problems. At the time I was working for the Portuguese Navy and my HotPot creations were meant for my students. I also made them available for the www through my site. Anyone else would like to add something to this? Other perspectives? |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2529 02/16/2007 | Hi Gladys I must confess I am a great fan of HotPotatoes. Most of the interactive exercises I have created have been done with HotPot. They have a great support yahoo group, which is very active, you learn alot from it. There's a lot of sharing. If you want "advanced" Hotpotatoes, you can customize the source files. It's true that you need a server to upload the files, but , as we saw the other day, you can even send the files to motime server and create alink in your blog. You can also use free servers, if you don't have access at school. I found a free web server that we can use to host hotpotatoes exercises. I think it can be a solution to publish HotPotatoes exercises on the internet for those who don't have hosting space. You have to create an account here: http://hosting-a.ipdz.com/default.asp Go to Web Hosting Plans, choose the free option, fill in the form and then go to Hosting Control Panel. It gives you 100 MB of hosting space, no ads; files are uploaded by FTP,so you'll need an FTP client. I tried it with one of my HotPot exercises and it works quite well; it is reasonably fast. You can see it here: http://free.ipdz.com/baw07/index.html Happy Potatoes! |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2464 (Response to #2445) 02/15/2007 | In Brazil there are some language institutes called "Binational centers. "Every big city has one under a different name, in Brasilia it is the Casa Thomas Jefferson, where I work. Since this is a non-profit making institution, we also got free access to Hot potatoes. |
Sharon Betts #2447 02/15/2007 | Maru, I took your application form and did very well :) You do need to download and install the program for making hot potatoes quizes. Here are some tutorial sites for using Hot Potatoes: |
Moira Hunter #2613 02/18/2007 | Hi Maru, At last I passed a test - I got "ecellent" :-))) |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2463 (Response to #2447) 02/15/2007 | Hi Maru "Hot Potatoes is free for use by individuals working for state-funded educational institutions which are non-profit making, on the condition that the material you produce using the program is freely available to anyone via the WWW. The official site refers to bugs that have been corrected with new versions of the software. |
Maru #2475 (Response to #2473) 02/15/2007 | Hi Fernanda! Thanks for your clarifying answer. I work for an non state-funded institution. If I make the material freely available through the WWW and do not charge money to access the material, do you think I could use Hot Potatoes? Maybe they require me to work on a state-funded institution disregarding the free use I give to the material :-( |
Maru #2432 02/14/2007 | Hello Bawers! I registered in Script-O!I found it very useful and easy to use. The tutorials are clear. I am preparing an exercise, it is not ready yet. It is handy to have everyting in one place, I liked the concept. You have there for free: - a Class Page - Results - True/False Quizzes - Single Answer Multiple Choice Quizzes - Matching Quizzes - Fill Answer Quizzes and - Uploading Files to the Class Page When you suscribe you have also: - Calendar - Syllabus - Surveys - Games - Multiple Answer Multiple Choice Quizzes - Simple Cloze Quizzes - Short Answer Quizzes - Vocabulary for Academic Purposes - Interactive Reader and - Customized Comments See you tomorrow. Love: Maru |
Sharon Betts #2448 02/15/2007 | This is my first attempt with Script-O. Try it out: http://www.readingmatrix.com/quizmaker/?fuseaction=getdata.&id=1623&child=Class |
Cristina Costa #2449 (Response to #2448) 02/15/2007 | Very Well. I think everyone should be answering Sharon's quiz!!!! Thanks a lot! |
Elisabeth Fernandes #2456 (Response to #2449) 02/15/2007 | Sharon, Great quiz..... and I'm proud to say that I passed with flying colours |
Moira Hunter #2616 02/18/2007 | Sharon, I failed :-( As it said ' 6 weeks of joy', I understood the question to refer to the first live presentation which was in Tapped In. But a great looking quiz :-)) |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2513 02/16/2007 | Hi Maru In doubts about the need of a licence, you'd better write to Martin Holmes. He is the creator of the software and he answers personally all mails that go to the list of Hotpotatoes users: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/hotpotatoesusers/ You can also email him directly: mholmes@halfbakedsoftware.com |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2609 02/18/2007 | Hi everybody! I decided to make a worksheet today, but I have to confess that I started doing it not knowing exactly what a wroksheet was. I mean, I know what aworksheet is, but I didn't know what result I would get from http://wizard.4teachers.org/, so I decided to write something about about Brazil, just to test the tool. Here is the result: http://wizard.4teachers.org/builder/worksheet.php3?ID=95290 Reflecting about the pedagogical usefulness of this tool, I thought of one activity. The teacher could write some questions in the content area and then provide some links to sites where students could find the answers. For example, I am teaching a group and their next unit talks about the Grand Canyon. Maybe I could write some quesitons about the Grand Canyon and provide some links with sites where the answers can be found. What do you guys think? What other uses have you found for this kind of worksheet? |
Hala Fawzi #2626 02/18/2007 | Hi Ronaldo, Congratulations on your first worksheet! >I am teaching a group and their next unit talks about the Grand Canyon. Maybe I could write some questions about the Grand Canyon and provide some links with sites where the answers can be found I liked your worksheet. I am still experimenting using a poor wiki which I hope to build gradually. last week I put a note to create a sheet like yours, but about our main port in Sudan. Maybe you can also put it like "In Focus" element, with each link takes them to the targted information, for example; discover the Grand Canyon, facts about GC, sightseeing guide, You can even create e-cards for the place for students to sue after the lesson ends. Each link would take them to the information. Then they go to the questions with very rich vocabulary. My 2 Sudanese pounds , |
Ronaldo Lima, Jr. #2648 02/18/2007 | Hi guys! I tried using proprofs and created a (vocabulary) quiz for a group of mine.I liked proprofs - it certainly doesn't have as many features and options asquia, but it is free and it does't have the uploading problems people mayface with hot potatoes, i.e. you don't need a server to upload youractivity. If you guys could take some minutes (less than 5, I guarantee - or you failthe quiz =)) and take the quiz and give me some feedback, it would be great! |
Elisabeth Fernandes #2649 (Response to #2648) 02/18/2007 | Hi Ronaldo, I couldn't open the page...... any idea why not? |
Carla Raguseo #2652 (Response to #2649) 02/18/2007 | Dear Elisabeth, Just delete the asterisk at the end of the link! BTW, Good job , Ronaldo! |
Sarah (USA) #2160 02/11/2007 | I was looking over the activities for week 5 and took a look at the Discovery School. I noticed that the Custom Classrooms, where we save the documents we create, is closed. Is this an issue? |
Hala Fawzi #2174 (Response to #2160) 02/11/2007 | Hi Sarah, Number one active bawer! Unfortunately, the Custom Classrooms area on Discovery School is closed and it is not free anymore. However, luckily, those who have old accounts can still use them for free! We will explore it soon! I guess you deserve a private welcome Welcome to week 5! |
Hala Fawzi #2254 02/12/2007 | Hi again, To have full review of what is Hotpotatoes, how is it used, and whether it could be evaluated or not, have a look at this review: http://llt.msu.edu/vol5num2/review3/default.html Note that the interactive example are passwrod protected. It is beter not to clik on them, as it will take a minute to go back again to the article. |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2257 (Response to #2254) 02/13/2007 | Dear Hala The interactive examples (samples) are not password protected. They just ask for your name; it's one of Hotpotatoes functionalities, in the end the results of the exercise (your score) are sent by email to the teacher. Unfortunately it's not easy to implement unless you have a cgiin the server, and it doesn't depend on you most of the times So, to see the exercises, just write a name or a single letter and you'll be able to access them. |
Nelba #2402 02/14/2007 | Hi, Bawers: as I have said before, I would like to do my blog as complete as possible. My question is if I do an exercise in Hot Potatoes, how do I embed it to motime blog? Shall I link it? Thank you, Nelba- for StValentine |
Teresa Almeida d'Eca #2418 02/14/2007 | Nelba, I have always added the link. I'd do the same for the survey (your previous message. HTH. |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2421 (Response to #2418) 02/14/2007 | Hi Nelba You don't exactly embed it in your blog, you create a link to your hotpotatoes file.Follow these steps: 1. Create your Hotpot exercise 2. Save it as html 3. In your blog, choose Add file 4. Browse your computer for the html file and upload it 5. You'll see a link to your file I hope it helps |
Fernanda Rodrigues #2422 (Response to #2421) 02/14/2007 | Hi Nelba A correction to my previous post: you can indeed embed a hotpot exercise: You have to change into "Source" and then paste the code of the hopotatoes html file, but you have to remove the first lines ( startwith )and the 2 last lines( |
